The Latymer School, Edmonton is a voluntary-aided selective grammar school for boys and girls aged 11 to 18 in the London Borough of Enfield, admitting 192 pupils each September under its Published Admission Number. Entry is decided by a compulsory test in Mathematics and Verbal Reasoning — set by GL Assessment — and English, set and marked by the school's own staff, with only the 700 highest-ranked applicants on the combined Maths/VR score having their English paper marked.

Our expert 11+ tutors help Latymer School Edmonton applicants prepare for both papers the school actually sets — the GL Assessment Mathematics and Verbal Reasoning test, and Latymer's own English paper — building a programme around each child's target rank.

Updated for September 2027 entry - places, rank thresholds and key dates

The Latymer School's Published Admission Number for Year 7 is 192, ranked from a compulsory test in Mathematics and Verbal Reasoning (set by GL Assessment) and English (set and marked by the school's own staff), per its determined admission arrangements for entry in September 2027, published February 2026.

Only the 700 highest-ranked applicants on the combined Maths/VR score have their English paper marked, rising to a top-900 threshold for looked after children and for Universal Credit/Free School Meals applicants; the next 50 highest-ranked names form the waiting list.

Registration (the SIF) ran from 17 March to 2 June 2026 and tests were sat on 3-5 September 2026; the London Borough of Enfield's own secondary transfer deadline for September 2027 entry is 31 October 2026.

Quest Assessments replaces GL Assessment for Latymer's 11+ testing only from September 2027 testing onwards, for September 2028 entry - the cycle just tested is unaffected.

Preparing for Latymer School Edmonton — Where to Start

If you're a parent in or near Edmonton N9 and you're considering Latymer School Edmonton for your child's secondary education, the chances are you already feel the weight of the decision ahead. Starting 11+ preparation can feel overwhelming — not because you doubt your child, but because it's genuinely hard to know where to begin, how early is early enough, and whether what you're doing is actually working. This guide is written specifically for families applying to Latymer School Edmonton. It covers the exam format, what the school is really looking for, and how to build a preparation plan that gives your child a genuine chance of success.

One important point before anything else: Latymer School Edmonton is not the same school as Latymer Upper in Hammersmith. They share a historical connection but are entirely separate institutions with different admissions processes, different fee structures, and different exam formats. Latymer School Edmonton is a state-funded selective school — free to attend — which is a significant part of why competition for places is so intense.

Understanding the Latymer Edmonton Own Test — Sections, Timing, and Scoring

Latymer School Edmonton's own determined admission arrangements for entry in September 2027 set out a two-part test, not a single school-written paper. Mathematics and Verbal Reasoning are tested together in a 60-minute, multiple-choice booklet — 30 minutes each — set and marked entirely by GL Assessment using Optical Mark Recognition scanning, and the school has no advance knowledge of its content. English is a separate 60-minute paper, split into 30 minutes of reading comprehension on an extract and 30 minutes of creative writing, and it is set and marked entirely by Latymer's own staff, not by GL Assessment.

The two papers do not carry equal weight in the ranking. Every applicant's Mathematics and Verbal Reasoning scores are combined into a single age-standardised score and ranked first; in normal terms, only the top 700 on that score are deemed selective at all, and it is only those 700 whose English papers are marked by school staff. Because several applicants typically share the same ranking position, the school notes that more than 700 candidates are usually inside that cohort in practice. Once English is added, the combined scores are re-standardised into a final rank, and a candidate can move up or down that list — a strong English paper genuinely changes a child's final position, even though it cannot bring in a child who missed the initial top-700 cut.

Timing is tight across both papers, and children who have only practised at a relaxed pace often find real exam conditions difficult. One of the most common mistakes in preparation is spending too long on familiar question types in the Maths and Verbal Reasoning booklet, where speed and accuracy under multiple-choice, OMR-scored conditions matter as much as knowing the content.

For the English paper specifically, practise extended, timed writing from an early stage. Because the reading and creative writing sections each last exactly 30 minutes and are marked by Latymer's own English staff rather than an external test provider, the paper rewards children who can structure a response clearly and write with precision under time pressure — not simply those with the widest vocabulary. Many children who read comprehension passages confidently still struggle to plan and complete a piece of original writing inside 30 minutes; regular timed practice with specific feedback on structure and expression is what closes that gap.

It is worth being precise about which body sets which paper, because online guides to Latymer's test are not always accurate on this point — some describe the school as using exam boards or formats it does not sit, such as AQE, the transfer test used for grammar admissions in Northern Ireland. Latymer Edmonton uses neither AQE nor CEM; its Mathematics and Verbal Reasoning paper belongs to GL Assessment, and its English paper belongs to the school alone.

Because the two papers are set, marked and weighted so differently, a generic 11+ course rarely prepares a child for both halves equally well. Our expert Latymer Edmonton tutors build separate, targeted practice for the GL Assessment reasoning papers and the school's own timed English test.

What Makes Latymer School Edmonton So Competitive

Latymer School Edmonton offers 192 places per year — its Published Admission Number, confirmed in its own determined admission arrangements for September 2027 entry — which sounds substantial until you consider the number of applications the school receives from across North London and beyond. The school has an exceptional academic reputation, strong sixth form outcomes, and a culture that genuinely values intellectual curiosity. For families in Edmonton, Enfield, Haringey, and the surrounding areas, it represents one of the most sought-after state school places available.

The school's popularity means that children sitting the entrance test are, almost without exception, well-prepared and academically able. Reaching the threshold is not simply a matter of being a strong student — it requires focused, specific preparation over a sustained period. Children who arrive at the exam having only worked through a handful of practice papers are unlikely to be competitive against peers who have prepared thoroughly and strategically.

Key reasons families prioritise Latymer School Edmonton:

Those 192 places are not simply the top 192 test scores. Governors work through four oversubscription criteria in a fixed order: looked after and previously looked after children first, ranked against a wider top-900 threshold on the combined Maths/VR score with no fixed cap on numbers; then up to 20 places for applicants who can evidence Universal Credit or Free School Meals, also judged against that top-900 threshold; then up to 20 places awarded by music audition to applicants inside the ordinary top-700 band; and finally, every remaining place going to Inner Area residents in strict rank order from that same top-700 list. Every criterion above the last also requires Inner Area residence, except looked after children, who face no residency requirement at all. For the postcode boundaries that define the Inner Area itself, see our guide to Latymer's designated area rules for September 2027 entry. The 50 highest-ranked applicants who narrowly miss a place go onto a waiting list that remains open until 31 December, and — like every designated grammar school — Latymer is not permitted to give any priority to siblings or former pupils.

Applying from Overseas: Where the Test Is Sat and Which Address Counts

The Latymer School, Edmonton holds its entrance tests at its own site, Haselbury Road, Edmonton, N9 9TN, and gives priority for September 2027 entry to applicants who are resident in its Inner Area as of Thursday 7 January 2027. The 2027-entry application closed on 2 June 2026. The rules quoted below come from the school's own admission arrangements, 2027 admissions, FAQ, in-year and 2028 pages, read on 3 October 2026.

Where the tests are sat

The determined admission arrangements for September 2027 entry say: “All tests will take place at The Latymer School, Haselbury Road, Edmonton, N9 9TN and can only be taken once at the beginning of Year 6.” They add: “Applicants will be invited to attend on one of these days only. All tests are taken on the same day.” Candidates “will be required to produce photographic ID on the day of the test”, and the invitation, which details the date and time, is sent “before the end of July”.

On a missed sitting, the same document says: “For registered applicants unable to attend the test session offered due to illness, a late test will be arranged. For any other circumstance(s) please contact the school for further advice.” A family travelling from abroad should expect the invitation to name the day, and should write to admissions@latymer.co.uk about any clash.

Registering and the council form, from another country

Two applications are involved. The first is the school’s own form. The registration window ran to Tuesday 2 June 2026, and the arrangements add: “We are unable to accept registrations after this date, or registrations made via tutoring group websites.” A family therefore registers on the school’s own site, not through a tutoring company’s. The 2027 admissions page records: “As of 2nd June 2026, the online application for entry in Year 7 in September 2027 is closed.”

The second is the council form. The arrangements say: “To make an application to The Latymer School, parents must name The Latymer School on the Common Application Form (CAF) issued by the applicant’s Local Authority (the Home Local Authority).” The school’s FAQ says parents submit it “to their own local authority”, “irrespective of the Borough/County in which the school is located”. Which council counts as the Home Local Authority for a child living abroad is a question for the council; our guide to 11+ entry from overseas covers the council application for families abroad.

For September 2028 entry, the school’s 2028 admissions page says: “Please visit this page regularly, as we will add new information as and when it becomes available.”

Our expert 11+ tutors help Latymer applicants living abroad prepare for the school's tests, one to one, and families outside the UK can take the whole programme online. Book a free consultation to talk through a preparation plan built around your child's actual test cycle.

The address date: Thursday 7 January 2027

The arrangements restrict admission by address: “Only children residing in one of these postcodes will be admitted to the school.” The postcode districts are set out in our guide to Latymer’s designated area, and looked after children are treated separately, as set out above. Two further passages matter to a family abroad. The first defines the address: “Main Address means the place at which the applicant spends the weekday nights in the ordinary course of events.” The second sets the date for September 2027 entry:

“Priority is given to those applicants who are resident in the Inner Area as of Thursday 7th January 2027. Therefore, applicants living outside of our published Inner Area at the time of registering for the assessment tests, must provide evidence of their new Inner Area address by the Thursday 7th January 2027 if they wish to be considered for admission to the school.”

In the oversubscription criteria, criterion 5 reads: “Applicant’s resident outside of the published criteria will not be considered until resident within the Inner Area.” How the school applies the Main Address definition and the 7 January 2027 date to a child whose family home is abroad, and which documents it accepts as “evidence of their new Inner Area address”, are questions to put to the school in writing at admissions@latymer.co.uk. Keep the reply with the registration paperwork.

If the move comes after the test, or mid-year

The arrangements list ways a waiting-list position can change. One reads: “Parents with a child who sat the assessment tests but are currently residing in the Outer Area - if families relocate, their child may be reconsidered for a place on the waiting list in rank order.” A family abroad should ask the school in writing whether that route covers their circumstances.

The in-year page covers Year 7 to Year 11: “To be considered for In Year admission to the Latymer School, applicants must reside within our published Inner Area (see below).” It adds: “Applications will be accepted from applicants living outside the Inner Area, such applications are rarely successful because the school is heavily oversubscribed with applications from those living in the Inner Area. If an application from an out of area applicant was successful, the school will not offer the place until the applicant and family show evidence that they have relocated to the published Inner Area.” Enfield Admissions coordinates in-year vacancies, and the school’s in-year tests are “written papers constructed by Heads of Department at the school; they are not multiple-choice tests.” Our guides to joining a grammar school after Year 7 and relocating to the UK mid-cycle set out the process across areas; for families on a posting abroad there is also the forces families application guide, and the expat families guide covers returning to a UK grammar school.

Which Test Will Your Child Actually Sit — GL Assessment or Quest Assessments?

Families beginning preparation now need to know which testing system applies to their child, because Latymer is mid-transition. Everything described above — the GL Assessment Mathematics and Verbal Reasoning paper and the school-set English paper — is the format for entry in September 2027, the cycle whose registration closed on 2 June 2026 and whose tests were sat on 3, 4 and 5 September 2026.

For entry in September 2028, Latymer has confirmed a change: its 11+ assessment will be provided by Quest Assessments from September 2027 testing onwards, replacing GL Assessment for the Mathematics and Verbal Reasoning component. The school describes the incoming assessment as three sections — Mathematics, English Comprehension and English Writing — though it has not yet published the detailed timing or marking breakdown that its GL Assessment-era arrangements set out for the cycle just tested.

In practice, this means a child currently in Year 5 (working towards a September 2028 place) should expect a different assessment experience from a child who has just sat the September 2027 papers, even though both are being tested on mathematical reasoning, verbal reasoning and English ability. Until Latymer publishes full Quest Assessments guidance, our tutors prepare Year 4 and Year 5 families on the core skills both systems test — accurate, fast reasoning and structured written English — while tracking the school's published updates for anything format-specific.

How Leading Tuition Prepares Students for the Latymer Edmonton Own Test

At Leading Tuition, we provide 1-to-1 specialist tutoring for children preparing for the Latymer School Edmonton entrance examination. Our approach is built around the specific demands of the Latymer own test — not a generic 11+ programme that could apply to any school in the country.

Our 11+ specialists prepare Latymer Edmonton applicants for both halves of the school's test — the GL Assessment Mathematics and Verbal Reasoning paper, and Latymer's own English paper — tailoring sessions to the academic standard this selective Enfield grammar school expects at 11+. Our students have achieved a 95%+ offer rate across selective school entry. Book a free consultation to discuss a preparation plan for the Latymer School Edmonton 11+.

We begin with a careful assessment of where your child currently stands in both English and Mathematics, identifying the areas that need the most attention and building a structured plan from there. Sessions focus on the question styles and reasoning demands that appear in the Latymer exam, and we incorporate timed practice throughout — not just in the final weeks, but as a consistent element of preparation from early on.

We also work on the writing component of the English paper in detail, because this is where many otherwise strong candidates lose marks. Our tutors provide specific, constructive feedback on structure, vocabulary, and expression — the kind of targeted input that practice papers alone cannot provide.

Supporting the Whole Family Through the 11+ Process

The 11+ process is not just demanding for children — it places real pressure on parents too. Managing preparation schedules, keeping your child motivated across many months, and making decisions about which schools to apply to can all feel like a great deal to carry alongside everything else in family life.

Our role at Leading Tuition is to take as much of that weight as possible. We keep parents informed about their child's progress in clear, honest terms — not reassuring generalities, but specific feedback on what is improving and what still needs work. We also help families think through their broader application strategy — including how to balance a Latymer application alongside our wider Enfield 11+ tuition or North London 11+ tuition for neighbouring selective schools — without spreading preparation too thin.

Children who prepare well and feel supported — both academically and emotionally — tend to perform better on the day. That combination of rigorous preparation and genuine encouragement is what we aim to provide.

For official entry requirements and registration details, see the Latymer School Edmonton admissions.

If your child is registered for the Latymer Edmonton test, or you are planning ahead for a future entry, our expert 11+ tutors can build a programme around your child's actual timeline — whether that means the GL Assessment papers just sat or the incoming Quest Assessments route.

Frequently Asked Questions about the Latymer School Edmonton 11+

When should we start preparing for the Latymer School Edmonton entrance test?

Most families who are serious about Latymer Edmonton begin structured preparation around 12 to 18 months before the exam — typically in Year 4 or early Year 5. Starting earlier allows time to build skills gradually rather than cramming, and gives children the opportunity to develop genuine confidence rather than surface familiarity with question types. That said, children who begin later can still prepare effectively with a focused, well-structured programme.

How do we keep a child motivated over such a long preparation period?

Motivation tends to hold when children can see their own progress clearly. Breaking preparation into short-term goals — rather than keeping the focus fixed on a distant exam date — helps enormously. Regular variety in session content, honest acknowledgement of improvement, and making sure preparation doesn't consume every spare moment of a child's life all contribute to sustaining effort over time. Burnout is a real risk if preparation is relentless from the outset.

Are practice papers alone enough to prepare for the Latymer own test?

Practice papers are a valuable part of preparation, but they are not sufficient on their own. The Latymer own test — particularly the writing element of the English paper — requires children to receive specific feedback on their responses, not just a score. Without understanding why an answer is wrong or how a piece of writing could be stronger, children tend to repeat the same mistakes. Guided practice with expert feedback is what turns effort into genuine improvement.

How do we manage applications to Latymer Edmonton alongside other grammar school applications?

Many North London families apply to several selective schools simultaneously, which is entirely sensible. The key is to ensure that preparation is anchored to the specific demands of each exam rather than being entirely generic. Latymer Edmonton's own test has particular characteristics — especially in the English writing component — that differ from consortium or standardised tests used elsewhere. A tutor who understands the distinctions between different exams can help your child prepare for each one without the preparation becoming unmanageable.

How many places does Latymer School Edmonton offer, and how is the ranking calculated?

The Latymer School's Published Admission Number (PAN) for Year 7 is 192, set out in its determined admission arrangements for entry in September 2027. All applicants sit a compulsory test in Mathematics and Verbal Reasoning, set by GL Assessment and combined into a single age-standardised score. Only the 700 highest-ranked applicants on that score have their English paper — set and marked by the school's own staff — added back in to produce a final, re-standardised rank. Governors then offer places to the top 192 on that final list and place the next 50 highest-ranked applicants on a waiting list that stays open until 31 December.

Does Latymer School Edmonton prioritise siblings or give any locality preference?

No. The Latymer School's own admission arrangements state plainly that designated grammar schools must not give priority to siblings or former pupils, so having an older child already at the school makes no difference to a younger sibling's ranking. Priority instead runs through four oversubscription criteria in order — looked after children, Universal Credit/Free School Meals applicants (capped at 20), up to 20 music places awarded by audition, and then all remaining Inner Area residents in strict rank order. Every applicant, regardless of criterion, must live within Latymer's published Inner Area except looked after and previously looked after children, who face no residency requirement.

Is Latymer School Edmonton changing to Quest Assessments for the 11+ test?

Yes, but not for the cycle just tested. The Latymer School has confirmed that Quest Assessments will provide its 11+ testing from September 2027 testing onwards — meaning the assessment used to select children starting Year 7 in September 2028, not September 2027. Families who applied for a September 2027 place sat the existing format: a GL Assessment Mathematics and Verbal Reasoning paper and a separately set-and-marked English paper from the school itself. The Latymer School's own guidance describes the incoming Quest assessment as three sections — Mathematics, English Comprehension and English Writing — for the 2028 cycle onwards.

How can Leading Tuition help with the Latymer School Edmonton 11+ test?

Leading Tuition provides one-to-one preparation built around the two halves of Latymer's own test: the GL Assessment-style Mathematics and Verbal Reasoning paper, and the school's own 60-minute English paper, split evenly between a reading comprehension extract and timed creative writing. Because only the top 700 ranked applicants on the combined Maths/VR score have their English paper marked at all, our tutors work on accuracy and speed under multiple-choice, OMR-scored conditions first, then build the structured, feedback-driven writing practice the English paper specifically rewards. Sessions are tailored to a child's actual registration date and target rank, not a generic 11+ syllabus.

Can my child sit the Latymer tests from abroad?

The arrangements say: “All tests will take place at The Latymer School, Haselbury Road, Edmonton, N9 9TN”. A registered applicant unable to attend the session offered because of illness is given a late test; for any other circumstance, “please contact the school for further advice”. Ask admissions@latymer.co.uk about a child living abroad.

Which date decides if a child lives in Latymer’s Inner Area?

For September 2027 entry: “Priority is given to those applicants who are resident in the Inner Area as of Thursday 7th January 2027.” Applicants “living outside of our published Inner Area at the time of registering for the assessment tests” must provide evidence of a new Inner Area address by that date “if they wish to be considered”. Ask admissions@latymer.co.uk about a child living abroad.

Can a family relocate and still be considered?

The arrangements say: “Parents with a child who sat the assessment tests but are currently residing in the Outer Area - if families relocate, their child may be reconsidered for a place on the waiting list in rank order.” The list stays open until 31 December. Ask admissions@latymer.co.uk whether this applies to a child living abroad.
