GCSE tuition is subject-specific support for the exams sat at the end of Year 11, and what a tutor needs first is not the grade target but the exam board, the tier and the science pathway. Tiering applies to six GCSE subject groups: Foundation tier awards grades 5 to 1, Higher tier 9 to 4. The summer 2026 GCSE timetable runs 7 May to 17 June, with results on 20 August 2026.
The awarding body is chosen by the department, not by the family and not by the school as a whole. A student can sit AQA maths, OCR history and Pearson Edexcel geography in the same building, and the three departments will have made those decisions independently and years apart. JCQ's key dates document for the June 2026 series names AQA, OCR, Pearson and WJEC as the awarding bodies working to the common timetable.
Most parents discover the board only when a tutor asks. There are three places it is written down. The front cover of any past paper the department hands out carries the awarding body's name and the specification code. The exam timetable the school issues in the spring term lists a board against every paper. And the exams officer holds the entry record, which is the version that counts.
That last point is the one worth acting on, because the entry record hardens on a fixed date. JCQ sets the deadline for entries for the June 2026 series at 21 February 2026. From that day the board and the tier for every candidate are lodged with the awarding body. A change after that is an entry amendment processed by the exams officer, subject to the awarding body's own late-amendment deadlines and fees, rather than a conversation with a subject teacher.

Tiering is the single most consequential thing on this page, and it is the thing parents are least often told. Most GCSEs are untiered: one set of papers, the full 9 to 1 range available to everyone. A minority are split into a Foundation and a Higher paper, and the two papers do not award the same grades.
Pearson sets out the list plainly: “A small number of GCSE 9-1 qualifications will be tiered. These are: Mathematics, Modern foreign languages, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Combined Science.” Six subject groups, and between them they cover the core of almost every timetable.
The grade ranges are where the decision bites. Pearson states that “Available grades for candidates entered on the Higher Tier will be 9-4, with an allowed Grade 3 for candidates who do not quite achieve Grade 4”, and that “Available grades for candidates entered on the foundation Tier will be 5-1”.

Read that table twice. A Foundation entry in maths cannot produce a grade 6, however well the paper goes. If a sixth form asks for grade 6 in maths as the condition of an A-level maths place, a Foundation entry has closed that door in February, months before anyone sits anything. That is not a reason to push every student to Higher - the Higher grade range stops at the allowed grade 3, with no grade 2 or grade 1 beneath it, and a student out of their depth on Higher papers has less to fall back on. It is a reason to have the conversation before the entry deadline rather than after the mock.

Science is the other place where a school decision made early changes what the qualification is, and the vocabulary confuses almost everyone.
GCSE Combined Science is one course, awarded as a double grade. AQA states that “GCSE Combined Science students will receive a double grade on a 17-point scale, from 9-9 to 1-1”, and it counts as two GCSEs. Triple science - also called separate science - is three distinct GCSEs in biology, chemistry and physics, each graded 9 to 1, each entered separately.
Both routes appear on Pearson's tiered list, so combined science is itself tiered: a Foundation combined science entry caps the pair at 5-5. A student can therefore be on a route that has already excluded the grade a sixth form asks for, in a subject nobody has flagged as a problem.
The double-counting is worth understanding too, because it distorts every national figure a parent reads. Ofqual notes that “Results for GCSE combined science are double-counted in this release, because the qualification is the size of 2 single GCSEs.” That is part of why 5,661,970 GCSE results were issued in England on 21 August 2025, across 133 different qualifications, for a Year 11 cohort a fraction of that size.
It also has a practical consequence for tutoring. A combined science student and a triple science student sit different papers with different content weight, and a tutor working from the wrong pathway spends sessions on material the student will never be examined on. JCQ's key dates put the first examination on the common timetable at 7 May 2026 and the final examination at 17 June 2026 - six weeks, not a fortnight. A student's first and last papers can be five weeks apart, which means a revision plan built around “the exams” as a single block is built around something that does not exist. Sequence it against the school's own timetable instead.
Two dates after the papers matter as much. JCQ designates 24 June 2026 as a “Contingency day in the event of national or significant local disruption to examinations in the United Kingdom”, and candidates are expected to remain available for it - which rules out booking a family holiday that starts on 18 June. Then results: a restricted release to centres only on 19 August 2026, and release to candidates on 20 August 2026.

Note the gap between the two results dates. GCE results - A-levels - are released to candidates on 13 August 2026, a week before GCSE results. Sixth forms and colleges therefore know their outgoing cohort's outcomes before they confirm places for 2026 entry, and the confirmations land in the days immediately after 20 August. Parents comparing schools on GCSE outcomes in 2026 will find the measure they were expecting is simply absent, and almost nobody explains why.
The Department for Education states that “It is not possible to calculate Progress 8 for academic years 2024/25 and 2025/26. This is because there is no KS2 prior attainment data available” - the primary tests those cohorts should have sat were cancelled in 2019/20 and 2020/21. Progress 8 measures the distance a pupil travels between Key Stage 2 and GCSE. With no starting point on record, the measure cannot be produced for two consecutive years.
What is still published: Attainment 8, and the EBacc entry rate, which reached 40.5 per cent of pupils in 2024/25. And the national baseline for grades, which is the more useful thing for target-setting anyway. Ofqual reports that in 2025 “outcomes at grade 4 and above are 67.1% compared with 67.4% in 2024”, and that “Outcomes at grade 7 and above are 21.8% compared with 21.6% in 2024”. On that national picture, roughly 67.1 per cent of results reached a standard pass and 21.8 per cent reached grade 7 or above.
One more figure that changes how a grade 9 target should be read: AQA explains that “A formula is used which means that around 20% of all grades at 7 or above will be a grade 9.” That is 20 per cent of the top band, not a fixed mark. Grade 9 is not a standard a student can revise their way onto in isolation - it is a share of the top band, set after the papers are marked. That is worth saying out loud to a student who has decided anything below a 9 is a failure.
School-level comparisons are still possible, but they have to be built from subject outcomes rather than a single headline number. Our 2026 grammar school league tables rank on GCSE results for that reason, and should be read with the Progress 8 gap in mind.
It is worth being straight about this, because the marketing in this sector is not. The Sutton Trust's Private Tutoring 2026 report, based on the Ipsos Young People Omnibus, found that “29% of secondary school students in England and Wales have had private tutoring at some point” - up from 18% when the series began twenty years ago, and from 27% in 2019. That is 29 per cent of secondary students, not a fringe practice.
Where a family lives changes that sharply. The same report found that “In London 45% of pupils had received private tutoring, compared to 27% in the rest of England and 24% in Wales.” So 45 per cent of London pupils have had tutoring against 27 per cent elsewhere in England. Household income moves it too: “23% of those in worst off households have had private tutoring, compared to 30% in the best off.”
Two honest readings follow. Tutoring is common enough that no family should feel unusual for considering it, and uneven enough that it is a real access gap rather than a level playing field. And it is a supplement to good teaching, not a replacement for it: the students who gain most are those whose sessions are tied to the specification their school has entered them for, which is the whole reason this page starts with boards and tiers rather than with hours and prices.

The board is chosen by each department inside the school, not by the family, so two subjects in the same school can sit different boards. Three reliable ways to check it: the front cover of any past paper the department issues carries the awarding body's name and the specification code; the exam timetable the school publishes in the spring term lists a board against every paper; and the exams officer holds the entry record itself. Entries for the June 2026 series closed on 21 February 2026, so from that date the board is on record with the awarding body rather than a matter of departmental intention.
Tier is part of the entry, and entries for the June 2026 series had to be submitted by 21 February 2026. Changing tier after that is an entry amendment made by the exams officer with the awarding body, not a decision a class teacher can take alone, and each awarding body sets its own late-amendment deadlines and fees. The decision matters because the grade ranges differ. Pearson states that Foundation tier candidates can be awarded grades 5 to 1, while Higher tier candidates can be awarded 9 to 4 with an allowed grade 3. A Foundation entry therefore caps the result at grade 5 before the paper is sat.

The Department for Education has confirmed that it is not possible to calculate Progress 8 for the academic years 2024/25 and 2025/26, because there is no Key Stage 2 prior attainment data for those cohorts: the primary tests were cancelled in 2019/20 and 2020/21 during the pandemic. Progress 8 measures how far pupils travel between Key Stage 2 and their GCSEs, so without a starting point it cannot be produced at all.
