GCSE Mathematics is a tiered qualification taken by 893,198 candidates across the UK in summer 2025, second only to Science Double Award. Five specifications are in use: AQA 8300, Pearson Edexcel 1MA1, OCR J560 and WJEC Eduqas C300 in England, and WJEC's Mathematics and Numeracy double award in Wales. They do not share a paper count, a total mark, or a grading scale.
That last sentence is the reason this page exists. Search the term most parents use and the results are tutor marketplaces: how many tutors are on the platform, what they charge, how they were vetted. Useful information, but none of it tells you what your child is entered for. This page covers the qualification itself — the codes, the papers, the calculator rules, the tier ceiling, the formulae sheet and the regulator's own entry advice — taken from the awarding bodies, Ofqual, the DfE and JCQ rather than from other tuition sites.
No. In England the four awarding bodies each publish their own specification, and the differences are larger than the shared subject content suggests. AQA's is GCSE Mathematics 8300. Pearson's is the Pearson Edexcel Level 1/Level 2 GCSE (9–1) in Mathematics (1MA1). OCR's is J560. WJEC's English brand, Eduqas, offers GCSE Mathematics C300, accredited under the qualification number 601/5503/6.
Wales sits outside that group entirely. From September 2025 schools in Wales teach the WJEC GCSE Mathematics and Numeracy (Double Award), approval number C00/4968/0, which WJEC's own specification describes as being for teaching from September 2025 with a first award in November 2026. It is a double award, reported on a lettered eight-grade scale from A*A* to GG, and it is unitised rather than linear. A parent who reads an English 9–1 revision guide and applies it to a child in a Welsh school is reading about a different qualification.
The practical consequence is that almost every piece of advice worth having — which paper to practise without a calculator, how many marks are on the table, what the best possible outcome on a tier is — changes depending on which of these five your school entered your child for. Schools do not always volunteer it. It is printed on the statement of entry, and the exams officer will confirm it in a sentence if asked.
The common assumption is that Paper 1 is always the non-calculator paper. It is true for AQA and for Edexcel, and it is wrong for the other three.
OCR sets its non-calculator paper in the middle of the series: J560/02 at Foundation and J560/05 at Higher. OCR's papers are also worth 100 marks each rather than 80, so an OCR candidate sits an exam worth 300 marks in total rather than the 240 marks of the AQA, Edexcel or Eduqas equivalent. Eduqas splits the qualification into two components instead of three, each lasting 2 hours 15 minutes and carrying 120 marks, with Component 1 taken without a calculator. In Wales, the non-calculator assessment is Unit 2, and the paper lengths themselves change with tier: Unit 1 runs 1 hour 45 minutes at Higher and 1 hour 30 minutes at Foundation.

Two things follow from the table. A student on Eduqas has to hold concentration for a single 2 hour 15 minute sitting, which is a different endurance problem from three 90-minute papers, and it means one bad morning carries half the qualification rather than a third of it. And a student in Wales can be entered at different tiers across different units — WJEC's specification says so explicitly — which is a flexibility no English board offers.
They cannot. Foundation tier awards grades 1 to 5, and grade 5 is the ceiling. AQA's specification-at-a-glance puts it plainly: Foundation tier is grades 1–5, Higher tier is grades 4–9, and all papers must be sat at the same tier within one series. Pearson states the same range and adds the detail that matters most on Higher tier: grades 4 to 9 are available, "grade 3 allowed".
That parenthesis is the safety net. A Higher-tier candidate who narrowly misses grade 4 is awarded a grade 3 rather than nothing — but the band is deliberately narrow, and Ofqual is direct about what sits below it: "Higher tier students who do not achieve enough marks for that safety net grade will receive an unclassified result (U)."
So the two tiers are not two difficulty settings on the same exam with the same downside. Foundation caps the upside at 5 and has a floor of 1. Higher opens the top four grades and replaces the floor with a cliff. That asymmetry is the whole tier decision, and it is why the next section is the most consequential on this page.
Foundation. This is a genuine disagreement rather than a matter of taste, and the regulator has put its position in writing. In a letter to headteachers dated 23 January 2020, Sally Collier, then Chief Regulator at Ofqual, wrote: "a student who is expected to achieve a grade 4 or grade 5 should be entered for foundation tier. We know that some membership organisations recommend the opposite, but that puts students at risk of missing out on a grade if they do not perform as well as expected."
The objection parents usually raise is that a Foundation entry looks like a lower-status qualification. Ofqual answers that in the same letter: "a grade 4 gained on foundation tier is the same as a grade 4 gained on the higher tier, and this is also the case for grade 5… There is nothing on certificates that details the tier of entry." Exam boards are required to make it no easier and no harder to reach a 4 or a 5 on either tier. A sixth form, an employer or a university sees the number and cannot see the route.
None of this makes the school wrong. A student genuinely on the boundary between a 5 and a 6, with two terms still to run, is a real Higher-tier case, and entry decisions are usually made in Year 10 or early Year 11 when there is still time for the picture to change. The point is narrower: if the honest forecast on entry day is a 4 or a 5, the regulator's advice is Foundation, and a family is entitled to ask the school to explain a decision that goes the other way.

There are two answers to this question and most revision guides give only the older one. The permanent position, written into the specifications, is that almost nothing is provided. Pearson's Appendix 3 lists the complete set of formulae supplied inside the exam: the curved surface area of a cone, the surface area of a sphere, the volume of a sphere and the volume of a cone. Four formulae. AQA's appendix draws the same line from the other direction, listing the quadratic formula, the circumference and area of a circle, Pythagoras' theorem and the trigonometry formulae as things students "are expected to know… they will not be given in the exam".
That is not the position for the 2026 series. On 3 October 2024 the Department for Education decided "that it is not necessary for students taking exams in 2025, 2026 and 2027 to memorise the formulae for GCSE mathematics", and Ofqual changed its rules to require exam boards to supply formulae sheets for those three series. The sheets were not left to the last minute: Ofqual committed to publishing them "for the exams in 2026 and 2027 by 1 September 2025 and 1 September 2026 respectively so that students may become familiar with them before the exams".
The boards have confirmed the mechanics separately. AQA states that the 2026 formulae sheet "will also be provided as an insert with every question paper". OCR states that students "will be given a formulae sheet alongside each of the question papers in both the June and November exams taking place in 2025, 2026 and 2027". Separate Foundation and Higher versions exist, with additional formulae on the Higher sheet.
The revision consequence is easy to get wrong in both directions. A student who spends February drilling formula recall is spending time on something the exam will hand them. A student who assumes the sheet removes the work is also wrong: knowing that the sine rule is on the sheet does nothing for a candidate who cannot recognise the triangle that needs it. The sheet is a lookup, not a method. Time freed from memorising is better spent on choosing between methods under time pressure.
Grade 4 is the standard pass and grade 5 the strong pass. AQA describes grade 5 as "equivalent to a high C and low B on the old grading system", which places grade 4 at the bottom of the old C. The top of the scale was deliberately made harder to reach than the old A*: AQA notes that "around 20% of all grades at 7 or above will be a grade 9", so grade 9 is not a renamed A* but a distinction carved out of the old A/A* population.
In practice, the two numbers that govern real decisions are 4 and 5. Grade 4 is the threshold that ends the statutory requirement to keep studying maths after 16. Grade 5 is what a growing number of sixth forms ask for before admitting a student to a Level 3 programme, and what many competitive A-Level maths courses treat as a floor well below their actual expectation — a student intending to take A-Level Maths is usually expected to arrive with a 7 or better, because the algebraic fluency the course assumes is Higher-tier content used at speed.
Grades below 4 are not interchangeable either, and the distinction between a 3 and a 2 has funding consequences covered further down this page.
Summer 2025 is the most recent complete series with published national figures. The summer 2026 results were not available when this page was written; GCSE results day for the June 2026 series is 20 August 2026, with results released to exams officers on 19 August 2026. Every figure below is therefore labelled 2025 and should be read as the latest published position rather than the current one.
JCQ recorded 893,198 GCSE Mathematics entries in summer 2025, up 1.7% on 2024, second only to Science Double Award at 989,264 and ahead of English language at 866,023. Total GCSE entries across all subjects came to 6,160,034. Across every GCSE subject, 67.4% of grades were at 4/C and above and 21.9% at 7/A and above. The Department for Education's own summer 2025 analysis counts 831,550 mathematics results issued in England alone, which is the same picture from a second, independent source.
The number that has moved most is the resit cohort. JCQ reports that entries from students aged 17 and over rose 12.1% to 482,402, and that this group now represents 7.8% of all GCSE entries, up from 7.0% the year before. Maths and English are the overwhelming bulk of that cohort. This matters when reading headline pass rates for maths: the published figure blends 16-year-olds sitting the exam for the first time with a large and growing population resitting it, so a falling headline rate does not automatically mean 16-year-olds are doing worse.
Continue studying maths. This is a funding condition on the institution, not a preference of the school. For 2026 entry to a post-16 programme, the Department for Education's rules for the 2026 to 2027 academic year require institutions "to provide teaching and learning support to those on 16 to 19 study programmes and T Levels to improve their maths and English skills, where they did not achieve a grade 4 or above in GCSE maths and/or English at 16".
The route depends on the grade already held, and here the difference between a 3 and a 2 becomes concrete. Full-time students holding a GCSE grade 3 "must study towards a maths and/or English GCSE, as these students are those closest to achieving level 2 at GCSE". Students at grade 2 or below have a choice: they "can study towards a pass in Functional Skills level 2 or they can study towards a GCSE grade 9 to 4".
This is the mechanism behind the resit figures above, and it is also the strongest argument against a speculative Higher-tier entry. An unclassified result on Higher does not merely record a disappointing grade; it puts a student into a compulsory further year of maths that a secure Foundation grade 4 would have ended.
More primary-school arithmetic than most Year 11 revision plans allow for. The Edexcel Foundation content list does not begin at anything recognisably secondary. Its first two statements are to "order positive and negative integers, decimals and fractions" and to "apply the four operations, including formal written methods, to integers, decimals and simple fractions (proper and improper), and mixed numbers".
That is the top of Key Stage 2 restated as the floor of a Level 2 qualification, and it explains a pattern that turns up constantly in diagnostic work: a student who cannot reliably subtract with negative numbers or convert an improper fraction will lose marks scattered across ratio, probability, algebra and statistics questions that look unrelated to each other and to arithmetic. The visible symptom is a bad algebra score. The cause is two years earlier.
The tier weightings show where that pressure lands. On Edexcel Foundation, Number carries 22–28% of the marks and Algebra 17–23%. On Higher those invert: Number falls to 12–18% while Algebra rises to 27–33%. A student moving from Foundation towards Higher is not being asked for slightly harder versions of the same questions — they are being asked for a different balance of skills, with algebra becoming the largest single strand. Families working through the same arithmetic foundations earlier will recognise the overlap with 11+ maths preparation, which tests the same number sense several years before it becomes a GCSE grade.
Diagnosis before revision is therefore not a slogan. Working through a past paper for the correct board and sorting the lost marks by cause — arithmetic slip, method not known, question not understood, ran out of time — produces a far shorter and more useful revision list than working through the specification in order. Grade 5. Every English awarding body caps Foundation tier at grade 5 and awards grades 1 to 5 on that tier only; AQA's specification-at-a-glance states "Foundation tier: grades 1–5". A Foundation candidate cannot be awarded a 6, 7, 8 or 9 no matter how many marks they score. Higher tier awards grades 4 to 9, with a narrow safety-net grade 3 for candidates who just miss a 4. In Wales the WJEC Mathematics and Numeracy double award uses letters instead: Higher tier covers A* to D and Foundation tier C to G.
No, and assuming so causes real revision errors. AQA 8300 and Pearson Edexcel 1MA1 both set Paper 1 as the non-calculator paper, each worth 80 marks over 1 hour 30 minutes. OCR J560 does not: its non-calculator paper is Paper 2, sat as J560/02 at Foundation and J560/05 at Higher, and each OCR paper carries 100 marks for a 300-mark total. WJEC Eduqas C300 has only two components of 120 marks and 2 hours 15 minutes each, with Component 1 the non-calculator one. Check the statement of entry before planning practice.

A grade 5 is the Foundation ceiling, so the upside is capped, but the same letter confirms a grade 5 from Foundation is identical to a grade 5 from Higher and that certificates do not record the tier.
They must keep studying maths post-16 under the Department for Education's condition of funding. For the 2026 to 2027 academic year, institutions must support students on 16 to 19 study programmes and T Levels who did not achieve grade 4 or above in GCSE maths or English at 16.
