GCSE Chemistry 2026: Exams, Tiers and Boards

The periodic table is the only insert — and the tier decision sets the ceiling before the first question.

GCSE Chemistry is a separate science GCSE, graded 9 to 1, assessed by two written papers of 1 hour 45 minutes and 100 marks each. The only insert a candidate receives is the periodic table. Chemistry has no equation sheet of the kind GCSE Physics now gets: AQA's provision for 2025, 2026 and 2027 covers maths and physics equations only. In summer 2025, 174,088 students across the UK entered separate GCSE Chemistry.

What does a GCSE Chemistry candidate get handed in the exam room?

The front cover of the AQA GCSE Chemistry paper answers this exactly. Under Materials, the June 2023 Higher tier Paper 1 says: “For this paper you must have: • a ruler • a scientific calculator • the periodic table (enclosed).” Paper 2 carries the identical line. Nothing else is supplied — no formulae, no list of ion tests, no reactivity series.

That matters more than it used to, because physics moved. AQA confirmed that “students taking exams in 2025, 2026 and 2027 will not need to memorise the usual formulae for GCSE Maths, and the physics equations for GCSE Physics, GCSE Combined Science: Trilogy and GCSE Combined Science: Synergy”. Chemistry appears nowhere in that sentence. A Combined Science candidate therefore sits an equation sheet in the physics papers of the qualification and no equivalent sheet in the chemistry papers of the same qualification, in the same fortnight.

OCR issues a separate document titled Data Sheet as an insert for every Chemistry A component. The name promises more than it delivers. The June 2026 data sheet for J248 01/02/03/04 runs to two pages, one of which is the copyright notice; the content is the periodic table. The equivalent sheet for OCR's Chemistry B specification is the same. Pearson Edexcel prints the periodic table as Appendix 3 of the 1CH0 specification, permits calculators in both papers, and closes the obvious loophole: calculators must be “free of lids, cases and covers that have printed instructions or formulae” and must not hold “mathematical formulae” in storage.

So relative formula mass, moles, concentration, percentage yield and atom economy are recall, on every English board, in every paper. A student who can read a periodic table fluently but cannot reconstruct the relationships from memory will lose the quantitative marks whatever the specification says about calculators.

What is the 17-grade double award, and who is actually sitting it?

Combined Science is not two chemistry grades. Pearson states it plainly in the 1SC0 specification: “This GCSE qualification will be graded and certificated on a 17-grade scale from 9–9 to 1–1 using the total subject mark where 9–9 is the highest grade.” AQA's confirmed June 2025 boundary table for Combined Science: Trilogy 8464 has exactly seventeen grade columns, running 9-9, 9-8, 8-8, 8-7, 7-7, 7-6, 6-6, 6-5, 5-5, 5-4, 4-4, 4-3, 3-3, 3-2, 2-2, 2-1, 1-1.

The pair is calculated from the total mark across all six papers. A student who is strong in chemistry and weak in physics has nowhere to show it: the two grades reported are adjacent or equal, and they describe the whole qualification rather than any one science.

The scale of it is easy to underestimate. JCQ's summer 2025 figures put Science Double Award entries up 0.9% on 2024, to 989,264, while separate Chemistry fell 6.0%, to 174,088. Around 85% of GCSE science candidates are therefore sitting the double award rather than three separate sciences, and the qualification carries a footnote most parents never see: “Science Double Award: two grades are awarded.” The Department for Education's summer 2025 release makes the same point from the other direction — “Results for GCSE combined science are double-counted in this release, because the qualification is the size of 2 single GCSEs.”

Structurally the double award is six shorter papers rather than two long ones. AQA Trilogy 8464 sets two biology, two chemistry and two physics papers, each 1 hour 15 minutes and 70 marks, each worth 16.7% of the GCSE, with chemistry occupying Topics 8–12 on the first chemistry paper and Topics 13–17 on the second. Edexcel's 1SC0 does the same job with six papers of 1 hour 10 minutes and 60 marks, each 16.67% of the qualification. Either way, a chemistry paper in Combined Science is around two thirds the length of a separate-science chemistry paper, and it carries the same periodic table and no equation sheet.

Why does Ofqual tell schools to enter borderline students at Foundation?

The primary source on tier entry is a letter sent to headteachers on 23 January 2020 by Sally Collier, then Chief Regulator of Ofqual. It sets the boundaries of the decision: “Available grades on foundation tier are 5 to 1 (5-5 to 1-1 in combined science) and available grades on higher tier are 9 to 4 (9-9 to 4-4 on combined science) with a narrow ‘safety net’ grade 3 (4-3 in combined science) for those students who just miss grade 4 (or 4-4).”

The consequence is stated just as plainly: “Higher tier students who do not achieve enough marks for that safety net grade will receive an unclassified result (U). Therefore, a student who is expected to achieve a grade 4 or grade 5 should be entered for foundation tier.” Ofqual also names the counter-advice it is arguing against, and quantifies the damage: “In 2019 just under 4,500 students were ungraded on higher tier combined science, out of a total entry of over 140,000.”

Grade boundaries show why the advice is not merely cautious. In AQA's confirmed June 2025 series, a grade 5 in GCSE Chemistry 8462 took 66 marks of 200 on Higher tier and 132 of 200 on Foundation — 33% against 66%. A grade 4 took 42 marks of 200 on Higher and 109 of 200 on Foundation. The Higher paper is not a softer route to a 4; it is a harder paper marked against a much lower threshold, with a cliff underneath it.

The Trilogy row is the sharpest illustration. On Higher tier a 4-4 took 96 marks of 420, about 23%, and the safety net 4-3 sat 11 marks below it at 85. On Foundation the same 4-4 took 231 of 420, roughly 55%. A candidate who is a genuine grade 4 is far safer on Foundation; a candidate who might reach a 6 loses two grades by going there. The honest answer is that the decision turns on evidence from mock papers, not on ambition, and it is worth taking seriously in Year 10 rather than in the February before the exams.

Which boards prescribe the practicals, and which let the school choose?

Every English board must put practical work into the written papers, and the wording is common: “Questions in the written exams will draw on the knowledge and understanding students have gained by carrying out the practical activities listed below. These questions will count for at least 15% of the overall marks for the qualification.” What differs, and what almost nobody tells parents, is whether the activities are named.

AQA names eight required practicals for GCSE Chemistry 8462: preparing a pure, dry sample of a soluble salt; a titration of strong acid against strong alkali; electrolysis of aqueous solutions with inert electrodes; temperature changes in reacting solutions; the effect of concentration on rate; paper chromatography; chemical tests to identify ions in unknown ionic compounds; and analysis and purification of water samples. Two of those — the titration and the ion tests — are marked Chemistry only. AQA's Combined Science: Trilogy sets six chemistry required practicals, numbered 8 to 13, and neither of those two is among them.

Pearson Edexcel takes the same approach under a different name, setting eight Core Practicals across the 1CH0 specification, from investigating inks by chromatography to an accurate acid–alkali titration and identifying ions in unknown salts.

OCR does not do this. Its Chemistry A specification states that “It is compulsory that learners complete at least eight practical activities”, then groups the Department for Education requirements into eight Practical Activity Groups and hands the choice to the school: “The Practical Activity Groups allow centres flexibility in their choice of activity.” The examinable object is the apparatus and technique, not a fixed list of experiments. For revision this is the practical difference between the boards: an AQA or Edexcel candidate can work through a named list; an OCR candidate has to be able to handle an unfamiliar method built from familiar apparatus, which is a different skill and needs different practice. The same logic applies in GCSE Physics and GCSE Biology, where the practical counts differ again.

Why is chemistry in Wales graded A*–G, with a practical exam in February?

WJEC runs two different GCSE Chemistry qualifications, and the difference is not cosmetic. The WJEC specification approved by Qualifications Wales, qualification code 3410QS, is “not available to centres in England” and does not use the 9 to 1 scale at all. Its summary of assessment reads: “There are two tiers of entry for this qualification: Higher Tier – Grades A* - D, Foundation Tier – Grades C - G.”

It also keeps a practical exam, which England abolished. Unit 1 and Unit 2 are each a 1 hour 45 minute written paper worth 80 marks and 45% of the qualification. Unit 3 is a “PRACTICAL ASSESSMENT” worth 30 marks and 10%, and the specification is specific about how it runs: it “will be carried out in centres, but will be externally marked by WJEC. It will take place in the first half of the spring term (January – February).” It is untiered. A Welsh candidate therefore banks a tenth of the grade before the summer series starts. WJEC has published an updated specification “with a new Unit 3 for teaching from September 2026”, so families in Wales starting the course in 2026 should check which version their school is teaching.

Eduqas is the same awarding body's England-facing brand, and it is the outlier on paper weighting. Component 1, Concepts in Chemistry, is a 2 hour 15 minute written examination worth 75% of the qualification; Component 2, Applications in Chemistry, is 1 hour 15 minutes and 25%, and one of its sections is built on “a resource booklet containing an unseen article”. No other GCSE Chemistry specification concentrates three quarters of the grade into a single sitting. The Eduqas specification is in turn “not available for candidates in maintained schools and colleges in Wales”. If a family moves across the border mid-course, the qualification changes, the grading scale can change, and the practical requirement changes with it.

Where do the marks actually go in a chemistry paper?

Assessment objective weightings are set by the regulator and are identical across the boards: AO1 40%, AO2 40%, AO3 20%. Only two fifths of the paper rewards knowing things. The remaining 60% rewards applying that knowledge and analysing information — interpreting a rate graph, evaluating a method, drawing a conclusion from a table of masses. Eduqas states the same split component by component and adds two floors: mathematical skills a minimum of 20% and practical skills a minimum of 15%. A fifth of a chemistry paper is therefore arithmetic under time pressure, which is why weak GCSE Maths shows up as a chemistry problem long before anyone calls it one.

Edexcel publishes one figure the others do not, and it is worth knowing before a tier decision is made. Each 1CH0 paper “consists of ten questions”, and “27 marks of the paper will be overlap questions that appear in both the foundation and higher tier papers” — 54 marks across the two papers, more than a quarter of the qualification, answered identically by a Foundation and a Higher candidate. Foundation tier targets grades 1–5 and Higher tier grades 4–9 on the same specification, so those overlap marks are the shared ground on which the two tiers are compared.

The practical consequence for revision is unglamorous. Reciting definitions addresses 40% of the paper. Working through past questions with a mark scheme, and writing out the reasoning in full, addresses the rest. That is also where a tutor earns their fee: not in re-teaching bonding, but in showing a student what an examiner accepts as an evaluation and what they score as a description. For the current cycle the dates are fixed. JCQ's key dates for the June 2026 series require centres to register candidates for 2026 entry by 21 February 2026, and give 7 May 2026 as the first examination on the common timetable and 17 June 2026 as the last, with 24 June 2026 held as a contingency day. GCSE results are released to candidates on 20 August 2026. The 2026 series had not been awarded when this page was written, so every boundary and outcome quoted here is from summer 2025 and is labelled as such.

Frequently asked questions about GCSE Chemistry

Is a periodic table provided in every GCSE Chemistry exam?

Yes, on every English board. The AQA question paper front cover lists the materials a candidate must have as a ruler, a scientific calculator and the periodic table, enclosed with the paper, and both Paper 1 and Paper 2 carry the same line. OCR issues the periodic table as a separate Data Sheet insert for each Chemistry A component, including the June 2026 series. Pearson Edexcel prints it as Appendix 3 of the 1CH0 specification. No board expects a candidate to recall relative atomic masses.

Does GCSE Chemistry have an equation sheet like GCSE Physics?

No. AQA's confirmation covers “GCSE Maths, and the physics equations for GCSE Physics, GCSE Combined Science: Trilogy and GCSE Combined Science: Synergy” for exams in 2025, 2026 and 2027. Chemistry is not included, and no other board supplies a chemistry formulae sheet. Moles, relative formula mass, concentration, percentage yield and atom economy all have to be recalled. Edexcel closes the obvious workaround by requiring calculators to be free of cases with printed formulae and to hold no stored mathematical formulae, so the quantitative work is memory plus method.

What is the highest grade a Foundation tier chemistry candidate can get?

Grade 5, or 5-5 in Combined Science. Ofqual's 2020 letter to headteachers states that available grades on foundation tier are 5 to 1, and on higher tier 9 to 4 with a narrow safety net grade 3. The trade is real but the risk runs the other way: higher tier candidates who miss the safety net receive an unclassified result, and in 2019 just under 4,500 students were ungraded on higher tier combined science out of an entry above 140,000. Ofqual advises entering an expected grade 4 or 5 candidate at foundation.

Can a Combined Science student go on to A-level Chemistry?

Yes, and most sixth forms accept it, usually at 6-6 or 7-7 in the double award. The gap is not the grade but the content: Combined Science candidates never sit two of AQA's eight required practicals, the titration and the chemical tests for ions, because Trilogy sets six chemistry practicals rather than eight. They also cover the chemistry in six shorter papers of 70 marks rather than two of 100. Bridging work in the summer before Year 12, concentrated on quantitative chemistry and practical technique, closes most of that distance.

Do all exam boards set the same required practicals?

No, and the difference changes how a student should revise. AQA names eight required practicals for GCSE Chemistry and Edexcel names eight Core Practicals, so those candidates can work through a fixed list. OCR instead states that learners must complete at least eight practical activities and groups the requirements into eight Practical Activity Groups, with centres choosing the activity. An OCR candidate is examined on apparatus and technique rather than on remembered experiments, so the useful preparation is unfamiliar methods, not memorised methods. All boards put at least 15% of the marks on practical work.
