GCSE Biology is a separate science GCSE graded 9 to 1, sat by students entered for AQA 8461, Pearson Edexcel 1BI0, OCR J247 or J257, or WJEC Eduqas C400. Students on Combined Science instead sit two biology papers inside a double award graded on a 17-point scale from 1–1 to 9–9. In summer 2025 there were 183,539 UK entries for separate Biology and 989,264 for the double award.
Search for a GCSE Biology tutor and every result is a directory: an hourly rate, a review count, a vetting statistic, an enquiry form. None of them tells a parent which qualification their child is actually entered for. This page does. It reads the entry code, sets the five specifications side by side, and gives the tier ceiling, the overlap marks, the practical requirement and the regulator's minimum for mathematics — each one taken from the awarding body's own specification or from Ofqual, with the document named.
Start with the code, because it settles three questions at once: which board, separate or combined, and which tier. It appears on the statement of entry the school issues, and on the front of every past paper the child brings home.
AQA's separate GCSE Biology is specification 8461, and the entry code carries the tier with it: 8461F for Foundation, 8461H for Higher. Its combined award is Combined Science: Trilogy, specification 8464. Pearson Edexcel's separate Biology is 1BI0, with paper codes 1BI0/1F and 1BI0/1H, and its combined award is 1SC0. OCR is the one that surprises people, because it runs two entirely different biology specifications: Gateway Science Biology A (J247) and Twenty First Century Science Biology B (J257), with combined awards J250 and J260 respectively. WJEC Eduqas enters candidates as C400PF or C400PH.
The distinction that matters most is not the board but whether the qualification is single or double. AQA states the combined award plainly: it “will be graded on a 17-point scale: 1–1 to 9–9 – where 9–9 is the best grade”. Two grades, always identical or adjacent, counting as two GCSEs. Separate Biology produces one grade on the nine-point scale, alongside separate Chemistry and separate Physics.
Nationally the double award is not the minority route — it is the largest GCSE subject in the country. JCQ recorded 989,264 entries for Science: Double Award in summer 2025, 16.1% of all GCSE full course entries, against 183,539 for separate Biology. The government's own results release notes that combined science figures are “double-counted in this release, because the qualification is the size of 2 single GCSEs”, so the headline entry number represents roughly half as many students — still, by a wide margin, the most common way to study biology at 16.
Which route a school offers, and to whom, is decided in Year 9 on timetable and setting grounds, and we do not re-argue that choice here: our guide to triple versus double science at GCSE covers it in full. What follows assumes the decision has been made and asks what the exam in front of your child actually looks like.
More than most revision plans allow for, and the proportion is fixed by the regulator rather than chosen by the board. Ofqual's subject-level conditions and requirements for single science oblige an awarding organisation to ensure that “the total mark used to credit the relevant Mathematical Skills is no less than – (i) for a GCSE Qualification in Biology, 10 per cent of the sum of all of the marks allocated to assessment objectives AO1 to AO3”. The same condition sets 20 per cent for Chemistry and 30 per cent for Physics.
That 1:2:3 ratio is the most useful single fact about biology's relationship with the other two sciences, and it cuts both ways. It is why a student who finds maths hard usually finds biology the most approachable of the three and GCSE Physics the least, with GCSE Chemistry between them. It is also why the maths that does appear in a biology paper repays attention out of proportion to its size: 10 per cent is a small, closed and predictable set — means, percentage change, magnification, standard form, sampling and simple probability — and a student who drills it banks those marks for far less work than the equivalent marks cost in physics.
A second condition adds practical work: the marks used to credit practical knowledge, skills and understanding must be “no less than 15 per cent of the sum of all of the marks allocated to assessment objectives AO1 to AO3”. WJEC Eduqas states both floors in its own biology specification: “The weighting for the assessment of mathematical skills will be a minimum of 10%” and “The weighting for the assessment of practical skills will be a minimum of 15%”. AQA puts the practical figure the same way, saying questions drawing on the required practicals “will count for at least 15% of the overall marks for the qualification”.
Add them and roughly a quarter of a GCSE Biology paper credits something other than recalling biological content. These are floors, not ceilings, and a board may exceed them. A revision plan built entirely around learning topics is therefore leaving a quarter of the paper to chance.
The five specifications are not interchangeable. Paper length, total marks and even the number of components differ, and on one board the difference is large enough to change how a revision timetable should be built.

Four of the five split the subject evenly across two papers of the same length. WJEC Eduqas does not. Its Component 1, Concepts in Biology, is a written examination of 2 hours 15 minutes carrying 120 marks and 75% of the qualification — the longest single paper of the six routes set out above, and by half an hour. Component 2, Applications in Biology, is 1 hour 15 minutes and 60 marks, and it is not a content paper at all: one section is set entirely in a practical context and the other is built on an unseen article supplied in a resource booklet.
That has a blunt consequence. On AQA or Edexcel a student who has fallen behind can, in the worst case, concentrate on the paper still to come. On Eduqas there is no second content paper to fall back on: three-quarters of the grade is decided in one sitting, and the remaining quarter rewards reading and applying material the student has never seen. Comprehension practice is not optional on that specification.
OCR is worth one further note. Its component codes carry the tier, which is why J247 and J257 each list four of them rather than two. A past paper marked J247/01 is a Foundation paper; J247/03 is the Higher equivalent. A student revising from the wrong pair is doing the wrong difficulty of question, and the code on the front page is what prevents it.

AQA sets 10 required practical activities for separate Biology 8461 and 21 across the whole of Combined Science: Trilogy, the first seven of which are the biology ones. The arithmetic is worth stating plainly: a triple-science student meets ten biology practicals, a combined-science student meets seven, and the three that exist only in the separate qualification are marked “Biology only” on AQA's own list.
The other boards express the same regulatory requirement differently, which is a real source of confusion when a family moves school. Pearson Edexcel's practical science statement says students “must carry out all eight of the mandatory core practicals” for 1BI0, and the head teacher signs a declaration to that effect; failing to return that form is treated by the board as malpractice. OCR takes a different approach again, telling centres it “is compulsory that learners complete at least eight practical activities” and grouping the Department for Education requirements into eight Practical Activity Groups so that schools can choose which experiment satisfies each group.
None of this is examined as coursework. There is no practical exam in GCSE Biology on any of these specifications. AQA states it directly: questions in the written exams draw on the knowledge gained from the practicals and “will count for at least 15% of the overall marks for the qualification”. That is a substantial block of predictable, reusable material — variables, control, apparatus, sources of error, and the specific method of a named experiment — and it is written into the specification a year or more before the paper is set. Students who treat the practicals as a break from revision arrive at the exam having thrown it away.
The tier decision is the only irreversible thing on this page, and it is usually taken by the school in Year 11 rather than by the family. AQA is explicit: “A student taking Foundation Tier assessments will be awarded a grade within the range of 1 to 5”, while “A student taking Higher Tier assessments will be awarded a grade within the range of 4 to 9. A student sitting the Higher Tier who just fails to achieve grade 4 will be awarded an allowed grade 3.”
The other boards say the same thing in their own words. Pearson Edexcel states that “The foundation tier paper will target grades 1–5” and “The higher tier paper will target grades 4–9”. OCR Gateway lists its Foundation Tier as “grades 5 to 1” and its Higher Tier as “grades 9 to 4”. WJEC Eduqas allows a grade 3 for a higher-tier candidate a small number of marks below the 4/3 boundary. On Combined Science the ceiling is a double grade: Foundation runs from 1–1 to 5–5, Higher from 4–4 to 9–9, with an allowed 4–3 just below.
Said plainly: a Foundation entry means a grade 6 is not available, whatever the child writes. If a sixth form asks for a 6 in biology, the tier decision has already answered the application. That is a conversation to have with the science department while there is still time to change the entry, not after the papers are sat.
The counterweight is how much of the two papers is the same. Ofqual requires that “at least 20 per cent of the marks available in the assessments for each tier are made available through questions that are – (i) common to both tiers, and (ii) targeted at a Level of Demand consistent with grades 4 and 5”. Pearson Edexcel puts an exact number on its own papers: “27 marks of the paper will be overlap questions that appear in both the foundation and higher tier papers.” On a 100-mark Edexcel paper, more than a quarter of the marks come from questions that are identical across the tiers. A borderline student moved up to Higher is not facing a wholly unfamiliar paper; they are facing the same 27 marks plus harder material either side of them.
Fewer, and the fall is not small. JCQ's entry trends for summer 2025 place Biology among the largest subject decreases in the country: entries fell 5.8%, from 194,925 in 2024 to 183,539 in 2025. Chemistry and Physics fell alongside it. Over the same period Science: Double Award rose to 989,264 entries and 16.1% of all GCSE full course entries. Ofqual described the pattern in one line: “Fewer students sat GCSE biology, chemistry and physics but there was an increase in entries for combined science.”
The practical reading is that combined science is the normal route and separate biology the smaller one, which is the opposite of how the choice is often presented to parents. It does not follow that combined science closes doors: sixth forms setting requirements for 2027 entry very largely accept combined science grades for A-level sciences, usually asking for a specific double grade. What varies, and varies a great deal between schools, is the exact grade demanded. The only reliable source is the sixth form's own published entry criteria, and it is worth reading it in Year 10 rather than after results. Where the intention is A-level Biology and a medical or veterinary application beyond it, the separate qualification is the safer route because it removes the question entirely.
For the June 2027 series, AQA has published its dates: GCSE Biology 8461 Paper 1 sits on 11 May 2027 in the morning and Paper 2 on 10 June 2027, each 1 hour 45 minutes. For the June 2026 series, JCQ's notice to centres sets publication of GCSE results at “08:00 on Thursday 20 August 2026”. Those outcomes were not published as at 16 August 2026, which is why every entry and outcome figure above is labelled summer 2025 and sourced to JCQ rather than presented as the latest available.

AQA states that a student taking Foundation Tier assessments “will be awarded a grade within the range of 1 to 5”, while Higher tier runs from 4 to 9 with an allowed grade 3 for a candidate who just misses grade 4. Pearson Edexcel targets grades 1–5 at foundation and 4–9 at higher. OCR Gateway lists Foundation Tier as grades 5 to 1 and Higher Tier as grades 9 to 4. On Combined Science the Foundation ceiling is 5–5. Tier entry is a decision about the highest grade available, taken months before the exam.
