Leading Tuition is a UK tutoring service whose subject pages span GCSE, A-level and IB. UK candidates made 6,160,034 GCSE entries in the summer 2025 series and 906,425 A-level entries in summer 2026. This directory sets each subject we teach against its own national grade distribution, says which subjects are tiered at GCSE, and routes you to the right page for your child's level and exam board.

Two things make a subject directory useful rather than decorative. The first is that a subject is not one thing: GCSE mathematics and A-level mathematics have different cohorts, different grading, and different failure modes, and a tutor who is strong at one is not automatically strong at the other. The second is that some subject decisions are structural. At GCSE, tier entry mechanically caps the grade a candidate can be awarded, and it is decided months before the exam by the school, not by the student. Both points are set out below with the primary figures, so you can judge them rather than take them on trust.

Which subjects and levels does Leading Tuition cover?

The table below lists every subject we tutor, at both levels, with the national picture for each. GCSE columns come from the Joint Council for Qualifications summer 2025 tables, published on 21 August 2025 — the most recent complete GCSE series at the time of writing. A-level columns come from the JCQ summer 2026 tables, published on 13 August 2026. JCQ notes that its A-level figures are provisional, because they are not informed by late entries or reviews of marking, so treat the percentages as accurate to roughly a tenth of a point rather than as final.

Three notes on reading that table honestly. Combined science is a double award: JCQ counts each entry twice because the qualification awards two grades, so 989,264 is a count of grades, not of candidates. GCSE psychology is not reported separately by JCQ; it sits inside the “social science subjects” grouping, and the 51,883 figure and its percentages describe that whole grouping rather than psychology alone. And A-level statistics was separated out from mathematics for the first time in the 2026 tables, which is why its 1,140 entries look small against a subject that most people assume is large.

Which GCSE subjects are tiered, and what does Foundation cap the grade at?

Tiering is the single structural decision on this page that is worth more than any amount of revision advice, and it is invisible on every competing subject directory we read. Six subject families are tiered, and the rest are not. Writing to headteachers on 23 January 2020, Ofqual's then Chief Regulator Sally Collier set out the scope precisely: the advice “applies to GCSEs in maths, biology, chemistry, physics, combined science, and modern foreign languages”. Ofqual's own published explanation of the reformed GCSEs names the same set, adding that the tiered modern foreign languages are French, German and Spanish.

What each tier awards is fixed and asymmetric.

The safety net is the part families misread. It is not a normal grade band. Ofqual describes it as “intentionally narrower”, set at half a grade width, and a higher-tier candidate who falls below it is awarded nothing at all. That is why Ofqual's advice runs against the instinct of many schools: “a student who is expected to achieve a grade 4 or grade 5 should be entered for foundation tier”. The regulator adds, in the same letter, that “a grade 4 gained on foundation tier is the same as a grade 4 gained on the higher tier”, and that nothing on the certificate records which tier was sat.

The cost of getting this wrong is measurable. Ofqual reported that in 2019 “just under 4,500 students were ungraded on higher tier combined science, out of a total entry of over 140,000” — and noted that this was already a large improvement on the 11,000 who would have been ungraded in summer 2018 had nothing been done. For a combined science candidate an ungraded result is two GCSEs lost, not one.

If your child sits a tiered subject, the practical questions for the school are narrow and worth asking in writing: which tier are they entered for, when is that entry confirmed, and what grade are they currently forecast? Why do two science routes produce completely different grades?

Science is where the same word covers two qualifications with almost nothing in common statistically. In the summer 2025 series, combined science recorded 9.3 per cent of grades at 7/A and above and 57.8 per cent at 4/C and above. Separate biology, chemistry and physics recorded 43.5, 46.1 and 45.2 per cent at 7/A and above respectively, and 89.4, 91.5 and 90.9 per cent at 4/C and above.

The honest reading is not that combined science is harder. It is that the two routes are sat by different populations. Separate sciences are usually offered as an option to a selected part of a year group, and combined science carries the rest, so the combined award absorbs a far wider ability spread while separate science is close to a self-selected top set. What follows for tuition is practical rather than moralising: a combined science candidate aiming at grade 5 is competing inside a distribution where 57.8 per cent reach grade 4, whereas a separate chemistry candidate aiming at grade 7 is inside a distribution where 46.1 per cent already reach it. Those are different problems and they need different work.

It also changes what a target grade means. Combined science reports two grades, so a 5-5 or a 5-4 is the unit of progress, and slipping one grade costs twice. Which A-levels show the widest gap between sitting and a top grade?

For 2026 entry to university, the grades that decided offers came out of one national distribution: across all A-level subjects in summer 2026, 28.5 per cent of results were awarded A*–A, 9.6 per cent were awarded A*, and 97.5 per cent were awarded A*–E. Those national figures hide an enormous subject-level spread. Among the subjects we tutor, further mathematics recorded 58.9 per cent at A*–A and mathematics 42.5 per cent, while English language recorded 12.3 per cent and business studies 16.2 per cent. That is a factor of nearly five between the extremes of the same qualification in the same summer.

The reason is cohort composition rather than examiner generosity. Further mathematics is taken almost entirely by students who are already strong at mathematics and who have chosen a fourth or additional A-level; its 21,032 entries are a fraction of mathematics' 115,380. A-level English language, at 13,192 entries, draws a broader intake. Reading the A*–A column as a difficulty ranking is the mistake almost every league-table article makes, and it leads families to steer children away from subjects that would suit them.

What the spread is genuinely useful for is calibration. If a sixth-former is aiming at an A in psychology, they are aiming inside a distribution where 20.1 per cent of the country reaches A*–A. If they are aiming at an A in mathematics, 42.5 per cent do. The same letter on an offer represents a different distance from the middle of the cohort depending on the subject, and that should shape how much support is realistic and when it starts. Scale matters too: A-level entries rose 2.7 per cent to 906,425 in 2026 from 882,653 in 2025, and 349,917 students sat them, up from 341,577. JCQ also recorded that 830,769 entries came from eighteen-year-olds, 91.7 per cent of the UK total, against an eighteen-year-old population up 3.9 per cent on the year.

Subject popularity is shifting as well. JCQ reported that “maths remains the most popular A level subject with economics seeing the largest rise in entries and is now the fifth most popular subject”. Which five awarding bodies set GCSEs and A-levels in the UK?

Five awarding bodies offer GCSEs and A-levels across the UK. JCQ names them in the notes to its own results tables: “AQA, CCEA, Pearson, OCR and WJEC (Eduqas)”. Schools choose board by subject, not by school, so it is entirely normal for a single student to sit AQA biology, Pearson Edexcel mathematics and OCR history in the same summer.

The quickest way to establish the board is to look at any past paper the school has issued. The front cover prints the board name and the specification code, and the code is the thing that matters, because boards run more than one specification per subject. AQA's GCSE mathematics is specification 8300; OCR's is J560. If no papers have come home yet, the options booklet issued in Year 9 usually lists the board against each subject, and the exams officer will confirm it in a sentence.

It matters more than parents expect. Set texts in English literature differ between boards, so a tutor working from the wrong anthology is teaching the wrong material. The number and structure of papers differ. Tiering arrangements are set within each board's specification. And the mark scheme conventions that determine whether a method mark is awarded are board-specific. This site carries three parallel families of subject page, and they answer different questions. Knowing which one you want saves a great deal of clicking.

This page sits above all three. It is organised by subject and spans every level, which is why it carries the national data and the tier rules rather than repeating what the level hubs say about grading. If you already know both the subject and the level, use the table above and skip straight to the guide.

When in the course does subject tuition change the outcome?

Timing is the question every competing page answers with a lesson count. The more useful answer is tied to the exam calendar and to two structural dates that most families never see.

The first is tier entry. Ofqual deliberately timed its letter to headteachers for 23 January, “ahead of the entry deadline for the summer 2020 exams” — which places the decision that caps a GCSE grade months before the papers are sat, with a full term of teaching still to run. Support that arrives after entries close cannot change the ceiling, only the position under it. If a tiered subject is in play, the useful window opens in the autumn of Year 11 at the latest, and earlier if the forecast sits at the 4/5 boundary Ofqual writes about.

The second is the resit route, which is larger than most people realise. JCQ recorded that GCSE entries from students aged 17 and over rose 12.1 per cent to 482,402 in 2025, from 430,377 the year before, and that this group now represents 7.8 per cent of all GCSE entries against 7.0 per cent in 2024. JCQ publishes separate November tables for post-16 English and maths, which is where most of that activity sits. A grade 3 in August is not the end of the sequence; it is the start of a different one, and the November series is a genuine second attempt rather than a formality.

Volume is worth keeping in view when planning. The average sixteen-year-old sat 7.8 GCSEs in 2025, and nationally 21.9 per cent of grades were at 7/A and above and 67.4 per cent at 4/C and above. Subject choice within that eight is partly constrained: in England, 40.5 per cent of pupils were entered for all five components of the English Baccalaureate in 2024/25, and 25.8 per cent achieved all five at grades 4 or above, with a national EBacc average point score of 4.09. Those figures come from the Department for Education's key stage 4 performance statistics for 2024/25. Progress 8 is not quoted anywhere on this page because it was not published for 2024/25.

At A-level the calendar is tighter and the decisive period is earlier than families expect. Results were released on 13 August 2026 for the 2026 series; the work that produced them was largely done between the previous autumn and the spring. For a student whose target subject sits low on the A*–A table — English language at 12.3 per cent, business studies at 16.2 per cent — starting support in the second year is starting late.

It is worth two GCSEs rather than three, and its national grade profile is very different. The highest were further mathematics at 58.9 per cent and mathematics at 42.5 per cent. Across all A-level subjects the figure was 28.5 per cent. These are cohort profiles, not difficulty rankings: further mathematics is largely taken by students already achieving highly in mathematics, which lifts its distribution.
