A-level Biology is the largest science A-level in the UK: 73,925 students sat it in summer 2026 and 27.8% were awarded A*–A, against 9.3% at A* (JCQ, 13 August 2026). The specifications are not interchangeable. AQA's 7402 is 260 raw marks over three two-hour papers; OCR's Biology A (H420) is 270 over papers of three different lengths. The Practical Endorsement is certificated separately and never enters the grade.

That last sentence is the one most families are surprised by, and it is the reason this page opens with it. Practical work is compulsory, it is monitored by the awarding body, it appears on the certificate — and it contributes nothing to the A*–E outcome. What practical work does decide is the fifteen per cent or more of the written papers that test experimental method, and that is a very different thing to prepare for.

Which A-Level Biology Specification Is Your Child Actually Sitting?

Seven A-level Biology specifications are in current use across England and Wales, from four awarding organisations. They differ in the number of papers, the length of those papers, the total mark, the split of weighting between them, and how many prescribed practicals sit behind the course. A tutoring plan built for one of them is only partly right for another, which is why the first question in a consultation is always the specification code on the exam entry, not the subject name.

Three differences in that table change how a term of tutoring is spent. The first is where the weight sits. On Edexcel Biology B a single 2 hour 30 minute paper carries 40% of the qualification, and Pearson's own specification says half of it targets practical skills and techniques — so a student on 9BI0 who is weak on experimental method is weak on two fifths of their grade. On AQA the same student loses far less, because AQA spreads the risk 35/35/30.

The second is paper length. OCR's H420 asks for two papers of 2 hours 15 minutes and then a short 1 hour 30 minute synoptic paper of 70 marks. That is a different stamina problem from AQA's three even two-hour papers, and it is worth rehearsing in timed conditions rather than discovering in May.

The third is how much practical content is prescribed. Pearson Edexcel Biology A specifies 18 core practicals; AQA specifies 12; OCR groups its requirements into 12 Practical Activity Groups. More prescribed practicals does not mean a harder course, but it does mean more named procedures a student can be asked about by name in a written paper. What Does the Practical Endorsement Actually Decide?

Almost nothing that appears in the grade, and a great deal that appears on the certificate. This is the single most misunderstood part of A-level Biology, and it is the part competitor tutoring pages skip.

AQA states it plainly: "A-level grades will be based only on marks from written exams", with a separate endorsement of practical skills assessed by teachers and reported alongside. Pearson uses the same construction for both of its specifications — "The Endorsement will not contribute to the overall grade for this qualification, but the result will be recorded on the student's certificate." OCR's June 2026 grade boundary tables carry the point as a line of the table itself: against H420 04 and H422 04, Practical Endorsement in biology, OCR prints "This component does not count towards overall mark." Eduqas puts it in five words on its own summary of assessment: "Reported separately and not contributing to final grade."

The endorsement is certificated on a two-point scale. OCR's practical activities guide states that "The assessment is certificated as Pass or Not-classified", awarded against the Common Practical Assessment Criteria that all English boards share. There is no merit, no distinction and no partial credit. A student either demonstrated the competencies routinely across the course or did not.

So why does it matter? Two reasons, and neither is the grade.

First, universities read the certificate. A student who sat A-level Biology in June 2026 was confirming a university place for 2026 entry within hours of results being issued on 13 August 2026, and the grade and the endorsement result sit on the same document. A "not classified" endorsement beside three good A-levels is a question a medical school admissions tutor is entitled to ask, and it is not one a student wants to answer at interview. Second, and much more immediately, the written papers do assess practical work heavily. AQA's scheme of assessment states that "At least 15% of the overall assessment of A-level Biology will assess knowledge, skills and understanding in relation to practical work." WJEC sets the same floor in Wales: "the weighting for the assessment of practical skills will be a minimum of 15%."

Fifteen per cent of 260 raw marks on AQA is roughly 39 marks — on the June 2026 boundaries, more than the gap between a grade B at 146 and a grade A at 174. That is the practical mark pool, and it is won at a desk, not at a bench: identifying the independent variable in an unfamiliar method, explaining why a control is needed, spotting the anomalous result and saying what caused it, and evaluating whether a conclusion is safe. Students who treated the required practicals as a compliance exercise lose these marks reliably.

What Did Each Grade Take in Marks in June 2026?

Grade boundaries were published by every board on 13 August 2026, the same morning results were issued. Below are the subject-level boundaries for the six England specifications, with the A* and A thresholds expressed as a share of the maximum so they can be compared across different mark totals.

One caution about reading that last column across rows. Pearson publishes overall A-level boundaries on the uniform (UMS) scale only — its own document states that "Maximum marks and grade boundaries for the overall qualification (the 'cash-in') are only shown in UMS marks" — whereas AQA, OCR and Eduqas publish raw subject totals. The Edexcel percentages are therefore not measuring the same thing as the others, and a board-to-board comparison of difficulty cannot be drawn from them. Within a board, across years, they are exactly the right number to work to.

Within AQA the notional component boundaries are more useful than the subject line for planning. In June 2026 a grade A on Paper 1 was 61 of 91, on Paper 2 it was 62 of 91, and on Paper 3 it was 51 of 78 — so Paper 3, the synoptic paper that carries the 25-mark essay, had the lowest A threshold as a share of its marks, at 65.4%. It is the paper most students fear and the one where the boundary is kindest.

How Much of A-Level Biology Is Actually Maths?

Ten per cent, by regulation, on every specification. AQA's scheme of assessment states that "10% of the overall assessment of A-level Biology will contain mathematical skills equivalent to Level 2 or above". Pearson prints the same figure for both its specifications: "Questions assessing students' use of mathematical skills will make up 10% of the exam papers." WJEC sets it as a floor rather than a target — "the weighting for the assessment of mathematical skills will be a minimum of 10%."

On AQA that is about 26 raw marks of the 260. It is not calculus. It is arithmetic and statistics done under time pressure in unfamiliar units: magnification and image size, rates from a tangent to a curve, percentage change, standard deviation, chi-squared against a critical value table, Hardy–Weinberg, and an index of diversity from a species count. Pearson's own sample paper for Biology A puts a diversity-index calculation in front of students with the formula supplied and three marks attached, which tells you the assessment expects substitution and care, not derivation.

Ten per cent sounds small until it is compared with the boundary gaps. On AQA in June 2026, 26 marks is very close to the whole distance between a C at 118 and a B at 146. A student who is competent in Biology and shaky in arithmetic is not losing a decoration; they are losing a grade. This is also the single easiest thing to fix in tutoring, because the same seven calculation types listed above recur every year and can be drilled to automaticity in a handful of sessions. Which Paper Carries the Synoptic Assessment?

Synoptic assessment means questions that deliberately cross topic boundaries, so a student cannot answer by recalling one chapter. Every board builds it in, but they place it very differently, and where it sits determines how late in Year 13 a student can afford to still have gaps.

The practical consequence is a scheduling one. A student on Edexcel 9BN0 has a fixed, knowable eight-week window in which the pre-release exists and can be worked through line by line. A student on AQA has an essay worth 25 marks that rewards planning practice across the whole specification and cannot be crammed in the fortnight before the paper. Those are not the same revision year.

How Likely Is an A* in A-Level Biology?

Less likely than in Chemistry or Physics, and the gap is consistent. JCQ's UK figures for summer 2026, published on results day, put A-level Biology at 9.3% A* and 27.8% A*–A from 73,925 entries. Chemistry, with 65,541 entries, returned 9.4% A* but 32.3% A*–A. Physics, with 45,800, returned 11.5% A* and 32.5% A*–A.

The honest reading of that table is about who sits the subject, not about how the subject is marked. Biology has 8,384 more entries than Chemistry and 28,125 more than Physics, and it is the science most often taken by students whose other subjects are not sciences. A wider entry pulls the top-grade percentage down without telling you anything about how hard a given paper is. Biology's A*–A rate slipped very slightly, from 28.0% in 2025 to 27.8% in 2026, while entries rose 3.5%.

Where boards publish their own figures the picture sharpens. AQA's results statistics for June 2026 record 39,361 candidates on 7402 — more than half of the UK entry on one specification — with 8.9% at A* and 26.7% at A*–A, both slightly below the UK average across all boards. If your child is on AQA, those are the comparators that matter.

What Happens to Students on OCR Biology B (Advancing Biology)?

OCR is withdrawing the qualification. Its subject update on qualification withdrawals, first published on 19 March 2026, gives June 2028 as the final assessment opportunity for H422 and states that "There will not be a resit opportunity after the final assessment opportunity."

For a student starting Year 12 in September 2026 on H422 and sitting the A-level in summer 2028, this changes one thing and one thing only, but it is a serious one: there is no second attempt on the same specification. A student who misses their offer grade in 2028 and wants to resit will be resitting a different qualification — most likely OCR Biology A (H420), which has different components, different weightings and a different mark total — or moving board entirely. That is a year of re-preparation, not a summer of revision.

Two practical implications follow. Schools still teaching H422 should be asked directly what their plan is for the 2028 cohort. And any student on H422 whose university offer is grade-critical should treat the first attempt as the only attempt and build the timeline accordingly. How Does A-Level Biology Differ in Wales?

Wales did not follow England's reform, and the difference is structural rather than cosmetic. WJEC's A level Biology is unitised into five units — two AS and three A2 — and the specification states that weightings are "expressed in terms of the full A level qualification": AS Unit 1 at 20%, AS Unit 2 at 20%, A2 Unit 3 at 25%, A2 Unit 4 at 25% and A2 Unit 5 at 10%.

Unit 5 is where the two systems part company. In England, practical competence is endorsed by a teacher and reported outside the grade. In Wales it is examined for marks. WJEC's Unit 5 is a practical examination "comprised of two tasks: Experimental Task (20 marks) and Practical Analysis Task (30 marks)", and WJEC tells centres that the main topic areas for assessment "will be shared with centres early in the spring term each year".

Two consequences for a Welsh student. Fifty marks of the A-level are decided in a room with apparatus, not a written paper, and they are worth a tenth of the qualification — more than the difference between adjacent grades on most boundary tables. And because the specification is unitised, a weak unit can be resat on its own, subject to WJEC's rule that a unit attempted twice triggers a "fresh start" in which all units must be re-entered. English students on linear specifications have no equivalent option.

How Leading Tuition Plans an A-Level Biology Term

The plan starts from the specification code and the last set of marks, not from a syllabus checklist. A student on AQA 7402 who cleared the notional A boundary on Paper 1 and fell well short of it on Paper 2 has a Year 13 content problem; a student who scored evenly across both and still missed the subject boundary usually has a mark-scheme problem. Those two students should not be taught the same way.

In practice a term tends to run on three tracks in parallel: the specification content that is genuinely missing, the practical-skills question types for that board, and the calculation set. We weight the three by where the marks were actually lost, which is why the first session is spent reading a real script rather than teaching. Frequently Asked Questions — A-Level Biology

Which A-level Biology exam board is hardest?

No board is officially harder, because standards are aligned across awarding organisations, but the papers demand different things. In June 2026 an A on AQA 7402 took 174 of 260 raw marks (66.9%); on OCR H420 it took 176 of 270 (65.2%); on Eduqas A400 it took 204 of 300 (68.0%). Edexcel's overall boundaries are published on the UMS scale and cannot be compared directly. The more useful question is where the weight sits: Edexcel Biology B puts 40% of the grade in one 2 hour 30 minute paper, half of it on practical skills.

Does the Practical Endorsement count towards the A-level Biology grade?

No. AQA states that "A-level grades will be based only on marks from written exams", and Pearson that "The Endorsement will not contribute to the overall grade for this qualification, but the result will be recorded on the student's certificate." OCR prints the same point in its grade boundary tables: the endorsement component "does not count towards overall mark". It is certificated as Pass or Not-classified against the Common Practical Assessment Criteria. What practical work does affect is the written papers, where AQA guarantees at least 15% of the assessment tests practical knowledge and skills.

How many marks were needed for an A in A-level Biology in June 2026?

On AQA 7402 the subject boundary for grade A was 174 out of 260 and for A* it was 199, both published by AQA on 13 August 2026. Within that, AQA's notional component boundaries put an A at 61 of 91 on Paper 1, 62 of 91 on Paper 2 and 51 of 78 on Paper 3. OCR H420 required 176 of 270 for an A and 204 for A*; Eduqas A400 required 204 of 300 and 229. Boundaries move every series, so treat these as the current benchmark rather than a fixed target.

How much maths is there in A-level Biology?

A student sitting H422 in 2028 who needs to resit will have to move to a different specification — most likely OCR Biology A (H420), which has different components, a different weighting split and a different mark total.
