A-Level Further Maths: Papers and Options by Board

What AQA, Edexcel, OCR A, MEI and WJEC each examine — and how the qualification maps onto STEP and the TMUA.

A-Level Further Mathematics is a separate A-level, sat alongside A-Level Mathematics, and no two exam boards examine it the same way. AQA (7367) uses three two-hour papers; Pearson Edexcel (9FM0) and OCR A (H245) use four papers of 1 hour 30 minutes; OCR B (MEI, H645) sets one Core Pure paper of 2 hours 40 minutes worth 50% of the grade. 18,434 students entered it in England in June 2025.

How many papers is A-Level Further Maths, and why does it depend on the board?

All five awarding bodies build on the same Department for Education subject content, and there the resemblance stops. Where A-Level Maths is examined in three papers on every English board, Further Maths is not: the number of papers, their length, the marks available and the share of the grade each one carries all change with the specification. A student who transfers between schools in Year 13, or who revises from a textbook bought for the wrong board, is preparing for an exam that does not exist.

Two consequences follow from that table and neither is cosmetic. On AQA a single bad morning costs a third of the qualification, because there are only three papers; on Edexcel and OCR A the same collapse costs a quarter. And on MEI the Core Pure paper alone decides half the grade in one sitting of 2 hours 40 minutes, which is the longest single paper on any of the five Further Maths specifications and asks for a level of stamina the ninety-minute boards never test.

WJEC sits outside this comparison altogether. Its specification is regulated by Qualifications Wales and states plainly that it is not available to centres in England. It is also unitised rather than linear: assessment opportunities exist in the summer period each year, so a Welsh student can bank AS units in Year 12 rather than facing everything at the end of Year 13.

What is in the compulsory core, and what changes between boards?

The compulsory core is where the qualification earns its reputation. Edexcel's Core Pure content overview lists proof, complex numbers, matrices, further algebra and functions, further calculus, further vectors, polar coordinates, hyperbolic functions and differential equations. Every board covers substantially that ground, and several of those topics — complex numbers, hyperbolic functions, polar coordinates — have no GCSE ancestor at all, which is why the first term of Year 12 Further Maths feels less like an extension of A-Level Maths than a different subject wearing its uniform.

The differences between boards are small in volume and awkward in practice. AQA's compulsory sections run A to J and include a tenth strand, numerical methods, that Edexcel does not place in its core at all. OCR A's Pure Core specifies Maclaurin series and the integrating factor method for first-order differential equations, and extends matrix work to determinants and inverses of 3 × 3 matrices. MEI adds vector products to the DfE content, so that lines and planes can be handled with the cross product. None of these is a large topic; each is a whole examination question a student who revised from the wrong specification has never seen.

Proof by induction is the one piece of core content that behaves identically everywhere, and it is worth singling out. OCR A introduces it for sums of simple series, powers of matrices and divisibility; the other boards ask for the same three families. It is also the topic where marks are most reliably lost for presentation rather than mathematics: an inductive argument that reaches the right conclusion without stating the inductive hypothesis, or without closing the argument properly, does not earn full marks.

Which optional papers can you actually combine?

Every board restricts option choice, and the restrictions differ enough to be worth reading before a student assumes they can pick two topics they like. In practice the school chooses, because the options are taught to a whole cohort, but knowing the rule explains why a school teaches what it teaches.

Edexcel offers eight optional papers — Further Pure Mathematics 1 and 2, Further Statistics 1 and 2, Further Mechanics 1 and 2, Decision Mathematics 1 and 2 — and permits either any two Option 1 papers, or a matching pair of an Option 1 and an Option 2 paper. A student cannot take Further Statistics 2 without Further Statistics 1. The specification puts the arithmetic plainly: this makes a total of ten different option pairs.

AQA does not let students choose two separate applied papers at all. There is one optional paper, Paper 3, and it arrives as a pair of question-paper answer booklets in one of three fixed combinations: discrete and statistics, statistics and mechanics, or mechanics and discrete. Two of the three applied areas are covered whichever combination is entered.

OCR A is the most permissive: any two of Statistics (Y542), Mechanics (Y543), Discrete Mathematics (Y544) and Additional Pure Mathematics (Y545), with no matching-pair rule. Learners may take more than two to broaden the course.

OCR B (MEI) works by named routes rather than free choice. Route A is Core Pure plus Mechanics Major plus one minor option that is not Mechanics Minor; Route B is Core Pure plus Statistics Major plus one minor that is not Statistics Minor; Route C is Core Pure plus three minor options. Mechanics Major and Statistics Major cannot be combined with each other. MEI is also the only board currently withdrawing an option: Further Pure with Technology (Y436) has a final first-teach date of September 2026 and a final assessment opportunity in Summer 2028, with no resit opportunity afterwards.

WJEC removes the choice almost entirely. Further Statistics A and Further Mechanics A are both compulsory at AS, so Welsh students study statistics and mechanics rather than choosing between them; the only election comes at A2, where learners sit either Further Statistics B or Further Mechanics B.

Does A-Level Further Maths help with the TMUA?

This is the question most often answered wrongly, and the answer changed for Oxford applicants in 2026. The Mathematics Admissions Test was, in Oxford's own words, a test used from 2007 to 2025 for Oxford admissions to Maths, Computer Science, or joint honours courses. For the 2026 admissions round the MAT will not take place, and all applicants take the TMUA instead — so for 2027 entry, an Oxford Mathematics or Computer Science applicant sits the TMUA, not the MAT. Cambridge already required the TMUA for Mathematics, Computer Science and Economics, so the two universities now use the same test.

The TMUA is two 75-minute papers taken one after the other, each of 20 multiple-choice questions, with no calculator and no formulae booklet; results are reported on a scale from 1 (low) to 9 (high) to one decimal place, and there is no pass or fail. Registration for the October 2026 sitting closes on 28 September 2026 and the test runs 12–16 October 2026 at Pearson VUE centres, which is before Oxford and Cambridge interviews.

Here is the part that matters for subject choice: the TMUA does not test Further Maths content. Its content specification says the content of Part 1 is almost all covered within the pure mathematics specification of an AS level in mathematics, and the content of Part 2 is almost all covered within a Higher Level GCSE mathematics course. Complex numbers, matrices, hyperbolic functions and polar coordinates do not appear. Further Maths students usually score well on it, but that is because the test rewards speed, algebraic fluency and reasoning about unfamiliar problems — habits Further Maths builds — and not because any Further Maths topic is examined. A student without Further Maths is not shut out of the TMUA, and one with it should not assume the syllabus has done the preparation for them. Where does Further Maths content actually get tested? STEP

STEP is the examination that is genuinely built on the Further Maths syllabus, and the specification says so explicitly. STEP Mathematics 2 is described as the prescribed Pure content of AS Further Mathematics with some modifications and additions; STEP Mathematics 3 as the prescribed Pure content of A Level Further Mathematics with some modifications and additions, assuming everything in STEP 2 as well. This is the direct answer to a question parents ask constantly: Further Maths is not a formality for Cambridge Mathematics applicants, it is the content of the paper their offer will name.

Each of STEP 2 and STEP 3 is a three-hour paper divided into three sections, comprising 12 questions — eight pure, two mechanics, two probability and statistics — each carrying a maximum of 20 marks, with candidates assessed on the six questions best answered. No formulae booklet is issued and calculators are not permitted. STEP Mathematics 1 has not been offered since the June 2021 sitting, so guidance that still refers to three STEP papers predates the current arrangement.

Cambridge's typical offer for Mathematics is A*A*A, with Mathematics and Further Mathematics (A level only) named as required subjects, and all Colleges usually require at least grade 1 in two STEP papers, STEP 2 and STEP 3. The practical implication is a sequencing one. STEP 3 assumes A-level Further Maths pure content that most schools have not finished teaching until the spring of Year 13, while STEP itself is sat in June — which is why serious STEP work usually starts on STEP 2 material during Year 12, and why our STEP preparation runs alongside the school course rather than after it.

How many students take A-Level Further Maths, and what grades do they get?

Further Maths is a small, self-selecting entry, and the grade profile reflects that rather than any generosity in the marking. Using JCQ figures, A level Further Mathematics numbers in England are up from 17,140 to 18,434, an increase of 7.5% when June 2025 is compared with June 2024, and Further Mathematics entries as a proportion of the total A level entries increased from 2.1% to 2.3%. Across the whole UK, MEI records the same series as up from 18,082 to 19,390, an increase of 7.2%.

On outcomes, in 2025, 59.0% of male entrants and 56.2% of female entrants achieved grades A*–A. Roughly three in five entries at the top two grades sounds like an easy subject and is the opposite: the cohort is drawn almost entirely from students who were already strong enough at GCSE to be offered a fourth mathematical A-level, and the distribution says more about who takes it than about how it is graded. It also sets the practical bar for a competitive university application — an A in Further Maths sits below the median of the entry.

The growth matters for a different reason. A cohort rising 7.5% in a single year, in a subject where many schools run one small set, means more students taught in mixed groups, on compressed timetables, or partly through independent study. That is the gap one-to-one tuition is usually asked to close, and it is why we recommend starting in Year 12 rather than in the spring of Year 13.

When are the A-Level Further Maths exams and results?

Individual paper dates are set by each board, but the outer limits are common to all of them and published by JCQ. For the June 2027 series the entry deadline is 21 February 2027, the first GCE examination on the common timetable is 10 May 2027, the last is 22 June 2027, and 23 June 2027 is held as a contingency day in the event of national or significant local disruption. Results are released to candidates on 12 August 2027. In the June 2026 series the corresponding dates were 11 May 2026, 23 June 2026, a contingency day of 24 June 2026 and results on 13 August 2026.

The scheduling consequence for Further Maths students is specific. Taking both mathematics A-levels means six or seven papers on Edexcel and OCR A, five on AQA, sat inside the same six-week window as every other subject, and boards routinely place Further Maths papers within days of the corresponding A-Level Maths papers. Revision planned subject by subject rather than paper by paper tends to collapse in that fortnight. The first session establishes the specification, not the student's confidence level. Board, paper count, option pair, and whether the school has entered them for the combination they think they are sitting: those four facts decide what the next thirty weeks look like, and a surprising number of students do not know all four. From there the tutor works through the compulsory core and the school's chosen options with past papers from that board and that board only, because a Further Statistics 1 question from Edexcel and a Statistics Minor question from MEI test different things at different lengths.

Where a student is applying to Cambridge, Warwick or Imperial, STEP work runs in parallel rather than as a bolt-on in Year 13, for the sequencing reason set out above. Where they are applying to Oxford or Cambridge for Mathematics or Computer Science, TMUA reasoning practice is timetabled against the October sitting. Frequently asked questions about A-Level Further Maths

How many papers is A-Level Further Maths on each exam board?

It depends entirely on the board. AQA (7367) examines Further Maths in three papers, each two hours, 100 marks and worth 33⅓% of the A-level. Pearson Edexcel (9FM0) and OCR A (H245) both use four papers of 1 hour 30 minutes, 75 marks and 25% each. OCR B (MEI, H645) sits one Core Pure paper of 2 hours 40 minutes carrying 50% of the grade, plus a major option at 33⅓% or minor options at 16⅔% each. WJEC, available only in Wales, uses five units across AS and A2.

Which optional papers can you combine in Edexcel Further Maths?

Edexcel's eight optional papers are 3A–3D and 4A–4D: Further Pure 1 and 2, Further Statistics 1 and 2, Further Mechanics 1 and 2, and Decision Mathematics 1 and 2. You cannot mix them freely. The specification allows either any two Option 1 papers, or a matching pair of an Option 1 and an Option 2 paper — a Further Statistics 2 entry requires Further Statistics 1 alongside it. That yields ten legal option pairs in total, and your school normally picks one for the whole cohort.

Does A-Level Further Maths content appear in the TMUA?

No. The TMUA content specification states that Part 1 is almost all covered within the pure mathematics specification of an AS level in mathematics, and Part 2 within a Higher Level GCSE course. Complex numbers, matrices, hyperbolic functions and polar coordinates are not examinable. Further Maths students still tend to do well because the test rewards fluency and reasoning under time pressure across two 75-minute papers of 20 multiple-choice questions, with no calculator and no formulae booklet.

Is Further Maths required for Mathematics at Cambridge?

Yes. Cambridge lists Mathematics and Further Mathematics (A level only) as required subjects for its Mathematics course, on a typical offer of A*A*A. In addition, all Colleges usually require at least grade 1 in two STEP papers, STEP 2 and STEP 3, and applicants sit the TMUA before interview. STEP 1 has not been offered since the June 2021 sitting. Oxford requires the TMUA for Mathematics and Computer Science but does not use STEP.

When are the A-Level Further Maths exams and results in 2027?

JCQ sets the common timetable for all boards.
