St Michael's Catholic Grammar School is a Roman Catholic, voluntary aided grammar school for girls in North Finchley, Barnet, founded by the Sisters of the Poor Child Jesus in 1908 and established as a grammar school in 1958. It has a Published Admission Number of 128 for Year 7 entry. For September 2027 entry, applications opened on 14 April 2026 and closed at 4pm on 7 July 2026, with all four entrance papers sat on Friday 11 September 2026.
Specialist 11+ Preparation for St Michael's Catholic Grammar School
Our expert 11+ tutors help girls across North Finchley and Barnet prepare for St Michael's own entrance test, building the verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning, English and mathematics skills all four papers require.
Updated for September 2027 entry - full admissions cycle verified
St Michael's Catholic Grammar School has a Published Admission Number of 128 for Year 7, and its governors approved updated admission arrangements for 2027 entry on 23 January 2026.
Applications opened on 14 April 2026 and closed at 4pm on 7 July 2026, with all four entrance papers - Verbal Reasoning, Non-Verbal Reasoning, English and Mathematics - sat on Friday 11 September 2026.
Barnet Council's own key dates confirm 31 October 2026 as the closing date for on-time secondary applications for this cycle, separate from the school's own registration deadline.
Preparing for St Michael's Catholic Grammar School — Where to Start
Parents in Finchley N12 researching secondary schools for their daughter usually reach St Michael's Catholic Grammar School quickly, and the competition for a place is genuinely severe. St Michael's admissions policy gives priority to baptised, practising Catholic girls: its own policy document notes that “within living memory St. Michael's has always been oversubscribed with candidates who fulfil” its three main oversubscription criteria, so in most years only girls who meet those faith criteria are invited to sit the entrance test at all.
The practical effect for families is that preparation runs on two tracks at once: the academic standard needed to rank well in the entrance test, and the parish documentation needed to qualify under the school's faith criteria in the first place. A Certificate of Catholic Practice, signed by a parish priest and dated within three months of the application, cannot be obtained a year in advance, so families often underestimate how early the paperwork side needs to start even while academic preparation for the four entrance papers is under way.
This guide covers both tracks in detail: the academic format of the St Michael's entrance test, the full published admissions timetable and oversubscription order for September 2027 entry, and how Leading Tuition's specialist tutors prepare girls for the specific papers the school sets.
The St Michael's Entrance Test: Four Written Papers in a Single Day
St Michael's sets its own entrance test rather than joining a shared consortium exam. The school's admissions policy states plainly that a girl “must sit the entrance test set by the School”, and every applicant invited to sit it takes four separate written papers on the same day: Verbal Reasoning, Non-Verbal Reasoning, English and Mathematics. For September 2027 entry the test was set for Friday 11 September 2026, and after marking, “all applicants will be ranked in order starting with the highest score.”
The English paper is a written paper, not multiple choice, and the school does not publish a familiarisation booklet for it. Verbal Reasoning, Non-Verbal Reasoning and Mathematics familiarisation materials are available from the school's own site, and the school states that “these papers have been designed by the test provider” rather than written in-house, even though the school's own site describes the overall entrance test as one it sets itself.
If two or more candidates finish with equal marks within any oversubscription category and cannot all be admitted, the school resolves the tie using each paper in a fixed order: Verbal Reasoning marks take precedence over Non-Verbal Reasoning, which takes precedence over English, which takes precedence over Mathematics. Only if candidates are still equally ranked after that does the school fall back on distance, measured “as the crow flies” from the school's main entrance to the child's home address using Barnet's own Geographical Information System (GIS).
Prepare for All Four St Michael's Papers
Every entrance paper counts towards St Michael's final ranking, so weak spots in any one of the four cannot simply be absorbed by strength elsewhere. Our expert 11+ tutors help girls across North Finchley build accuracy across Verbal Reasoning, Non-Verbal Reasoning, English and Mathematics together, not just the subjects that come most naturally.
Leading Tuition is rated 4.8 out of 5 on Trustpilot from 59 reviews, read on 3 October 2026.
What Makes St Michael's Catholic Grammar School So Competitive
St Michael's is one of the most sought-after state schools accessible from North London, with a Published Admission Number of 128 for Year 7 against consistent oversubscription. It is a voluntary aided school in the Archdiocese of Westminster, and Get Information about Schools (the Department for Education's own establishment register) records 908 pupils on roll against a capacity of 940. Academic performance alone does not secure a place - the school's Catholic admissions criteria are applied first - but among candidates who meet those criteria, ranking in the entrance test is what decides who is offered a place.
Children who are offered places typically show:
Consistent accuracy in mathematics, including problem-solving and multi-step questions
Strong reading comprehension with the ability to infer meaning and support answers with evidence
Confident written expression in the English paper, including well-structured sentences and varied vocabulary
The ability to work at speed across four papers in a single sitting without sacrificing accuracy
Familiarity with the exam format so that nerves do not undermine performance on the day
The school's Catholic ethos is central to its identity, and families applying should read its published admissions policy carefully - the full oversubscription order, and exactly who is ranked ahead of whom, is set out in detail below.
September 2027 Entry: Key Dates and How to Apply
St Michael's runs two separate application processes that both have to be completed for September 2027 entry. The school's own Supplementary Information Form (SIF) opened at 9am on Tuesday 14 April 2026 and closed at 4pm on Tuesday 7 July 2026; a Certificate of Baptism had to be uploaded to the same online form by that deadline, and applicants relying on the school's Catholic criteria also had to deliver an original, signed Certificate of Catholic Practice to the School Office by 4pm on 7 July 2026. Separately, every family must also complete the Local Authority secondary transfer application through their own council's e-admissions system - for a family living in Barnet, that closes on 31 October 2026, Barnet Council's own published deadline for on-time applications for this cycle.

The entrance test itself was held on Friday 11 September 2026, by invitation only and in person at the school. St Michael's tells families that “you will receive the results of the entrance tests before you need to finalise the application to your local authority for a secondary school place at the end of October” - in other words, results land before the 31 October 2026 council deadline, giving families time to rank St Michael's correctly on their Local Authority form. Secondary National Offer Day, when every Barnet family learns which school has offered a place, falls on 1 March 2027.
Families weighing St Michael's alongside Queen Elizabeth's School, Barnet - the borough's other major selective option, and one with a very different, non-faith test - can compare both schools' 2027 entry requirements side by side in our Barnet tuition guide. An unsuccessful Year 7 applicant has the right to appeal; for St Michael's, appeals for the September 2027 round must be lodged by 4:00pm on 31 March 2027. Candidates who sat the test, met the oversubscription criteria and named St Michael's on their Local Authority form but were not offered a place are automatically added to a waiting list that runs until 31 December 2027, after which a standing waiting list continues to operate.
Keep Preparation on Track for St Michael's Key Dates
Two separate deadlines - the school's own 7 July 2026 registration and Barnet Council's 31 October 2026 application - mean preparation and paperwork have to run in parallel. Our expert 11+ tutors work with Barnet families on both the academic and timeline sides of a St Michael's application.
A girl living abroad sits the same four papers as every other invited applicant, and the school's own wording makes the sitting an in-person one in North Finchley. Three things change a family's plan from overseas: the test day, the paperwork that has to reach London physically (for a girl applying as a Practising Catholic, the original Certificate of Catholic Practice), and the Local Authority form. Leading Tuition prepares children for UK 11+ entry from abroad, and families outside the UK can take the whole programme online. Elsewhere on this page are the places, the oversubscription order and the tie-break; this section covers only what differs for a family abroad, and our guide to the 11+ from overseas sets out the rules for other areas.
The test is sat in person, by invitation, on one day
The school's Admissions 2027-28 page states it plainly: “Applicants must be available to sit the tests in person at the School on this date.” Entry to the tests is by invitation only, and the school's admissions page adds that “all four tests are held on the same day.” The sittings for September 2025, September 2026 and September 2027 entry fell on Friday 13 September 2024, Friday 12 September 2025 and Friday 11 September 2026, so each was a Friday between 11 and 13 September. Each date was published for its own entry year, so a later year's date comes from that year's admissions page and policy.
The application window falls in the summer term of Year 5
The school's admissions page describes the timetable: “applications open after the Easter holidays”, and “You will need to apply in the summer term of Year 5 for your daughter to sit the entrance tests early in Year 6.” Those are UK year groups. The school's admissions pages for September 2025, 2026 and 2027 entry record these dates:

For September 2025 entry the form opened on Monday 15 April 2024, and for September 2027 entry at 9am on Tuesday 14 April 2026. Two lines on the 2027-28 page matter more from abroad than from Finchley: “Registering on the system does not constitute making an application” and “Late applications cannot be accepted.” Creating an account and confirming an email address is only the registration; the application must still be completed and submitted by 4pm on the closing Tuesday.
Two certificates reach the school by two different routes
The baptism certificate travels online. The admissions policy says applicants applying as Baptised Catholic girls “must submit a copy of the Certificate of Baptism in the Catholic Church uploaded to the online application form” by the 4pm deadline, and adds: “If the child was baptised overseas and the Certificate of Baptism in the Catholic Church is in a language other than English a translation into English must be provided.”
For a girl applying as a Practising Catholic, the Certificate of Catholic Practice travels on paper. The policy says “Applicants applying as Practising Catholics must submit an original copy of the Certificate of Catholic Practice (CCP) to the School Office”, and the Admissions 2027-28 page says “The original paper signed version of the Certificate of Catholic Practice must be delivered to the School Office by the deadline, either in person or by post”, and “We do not accept electronic or emailed copies of the Certificate of Catholic Practice.” The page recommends “a tracking service” and proof of posting, and puts the risk on the family: “It is the responsibility of the parent/carer to ensure the original document is submitted on time.” The certificate should be “signed by your Parish Priest and dated within 3 months of the date of application”, and the policy states: “The priest will only sign the CCP if he knows you and agrees that you are a Practising Catholic family.”
The policy's definition of the certificate refers to one “issued by the family's parish priest (or the priest in charge of the church where the family attends Mass)”. A family whose church is outside the UK should put that question to the school in writing before asking a priest to sign, and keep the reply. The school's address for admissions queries is admissions@st-michaels.barnet.sch.uk.
Address: what the policy uses it for, and what Barnet's form asks of a family abroad
The policy defines Home Address as “the address where the child is normally resident”, and the Year 7 criteria use it as the last tie-break: “If there are still applicants who are equally ranked, then priority will be given to the applicant whose Home address is nearest to the School.” Faith criteria and test rank come before it, as the oversubscription section below sets out. A family whose daughter could reach that last tie-break should ask the school in writing how an address outside the UK is treated there.
The policy's second application is “A Local Authority Application Form from the Local Authority (LA) where you live”, returned to that LA's School Admissions section “by the date stipulated by the relevant LA”.
Barnet Council's rule, not the school's. The council's page on applying from abroad says that for a transfer to secondary school at the start of September 2027 “you will need to be living in Barnet or have a link Barnet address where you intend to take up residency by the start of the school year”. It also says that if you are living abroad at the time of application “your overseas address will be used for home-to-school distance calculations. This will determine your child's position on the waiting list for oversubscribed schools that give priority to children who live the closest. The distance will be recalculated to your UK address once you have arrived and taken up residence locally.” The rest is on our Barnet page for families abroad, and the overseas hub covers other councils.
St Michael's 11+ Preparation for Families Abroad
Our expert 11+ tutors help girls preparing for the St Michael's entrance test from outside the UK, working through all four papers, and families outside the UK can take the whole programme online.
School systems name their year groups differently, so the policy's test is the birth date: applicants “must normally have had their eleventh birthday in the academic year”, which the policy runs from 1 September to 31 August, “immediately preceding entry”. For a girl who would be educated out of her age group, the Admissions 2027-28 page says such applications “will be considered by governors on an individual basis and assessed in accordance with government guidelines”, and that parents write to the Chair of Governors “giving reasons and providing compelling evidence prior to submitting their application form.” That letter therefore comes before the application, not after it.
If the window is missed or the move comes later
The school's In-Year Admissions page sets out its own rules, and they are quoted here as written because they depend on the year group. For the older year groups: “If a place becomes available in your daughter's year group you will be contacted and invited to apply”, “Entrance tests are not required to join the waiting list”, and “Entrance tests will only be held if an in-year place is available.” For Year 7, the waiting list until 31 December “comprises of the girls who sat the entrance tests and requested a place in the secondary transfer admissions process but did not gain a place”, and “we cannot add any new names to the waiting list until after this date”; from January of Year 7 “new names can be added.” The admissions page also asks anyone interested in an in-year place to register that interest with London Borough of Barnet as well. A family arriving after the main round should ask the school in writing which of these rules applies to its daughter.
On appeals, the school's appeals page, headed for the 2026-27 round, says: “All appeals will be heard online which has the advantage that your appeal can be heard from your home or place of work.” For September 2027 entry the policy sets the last day for lodging an appeal at 4pm on 31 March 2027. Our guides to joining a grammar school after Year 7 and to relocating to the UK mid-cycle cover the general in-year routes, and the returning-to-the-UK guide covers the move home.

How Places Are Decided: Oversubscription Criteria and Tie-Breaks
When St Michael's is oversubscribed with candidates who meet its main faith criteria - which its own policy says has always been the case in living memory - places are decided in this published order of priority. First, baptised Catholic girls from a practising Catholic family (evidenced by a parish Certificate of Catholic Practice) who are looked after or previously looked after, ranked among the top 175 places in the entrance test. Second, baptised, practising Catholic girls in receipt of the Pupil Premium, again ranked among the top 175, with a maximum of 32 places (25% of the total) reserved for this group. Third, all other baptised, practising Catholic girls, in rank order of their entrance test score.
Only if fewer than 175 girls fulfil those three criteria in a given year does the school fall back on a further published list: baptised Catholic girls generally, then Catechumens and members of an Eastern Christian Church, then girls of other Christian denominations, then other Looked After girls, then other Pupil Premium girls, and finally any other girl. St Michael's own policy says that "within living memory St. Michael's has always been oversubscribed with candidates who fulfil the three criteria" above.
Distance to the school only comes into play as the very last tie-break, and only when candidates are still equally ranked after every other criterion and paper has been compared. None of Barnet's selective grammar schools share a single admissions process: our guide to 11+ tuition in North London sets out in full how Queen Elizabeth's School, The Henrietta Barnett School, Dame Alice Owen's and The Latymer School each run their own separate registration, test and marking, since - as that guide notes - families sometimes assume a single ‘Barnet consortium’ governs all of the borough's grammar schools, and no such shared body exists. St Michael's registration, test and criteria are entirely its own, run independently of every other school in the area, including those four. A fuller side-by-side comparison of St Michael's alongside Queen Elizabeth's, Henrietta Barnett and The Latymer School - including places, test format and registration deadlines for the 2027 cycle - is in our guide to Barnet and Enfield's grammar schools.
Plan St Michael's Preparation Around the Real Deadlines
Two separate deadlines, four entrance papers and a faith-based ranking system make St Michael's one of the more complex applications in North London. Our expert 11+ tutors help families across Barnet plan preparation around the school's actual timetable, not a generic 11+ schedule.
How Leading Tuition Prepares Students for the St Michael's Own Test
Leading Tuition provides 1-to-1 specialist tutoring for the St Michael's entrance exam, working with girls in and around Finchley N12 and across North London. Because St Michael's uses its own test rather than a standardised consortium paper, preparation needs to be specific — not a generic 11+ programme that could apply to any school.
Our 11+ specialists work with St Michael's Catholic Grammar applicants on all four papers the school sets, building the verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning, English and mathematical reasoning skills the test requires. Our students have achieved a 95%+ offer rate across selective school entry, and we're rated 4.8/5 on Trustpilot. Book a free consultation to discuss a preparation plan for the St Michael's Catholic Grammar 11+.
Our tutors begin with a thorough assessment of where your daughter currently is across all four entrance papers - Verbal Reasoning, Non-Verbal Reasoning, English and Mathematics - identifying the precise gaps that need addressing before the exam. From there, we build a structured preparation plan around those four papers, with timed practice and the stamina to perform consistently across all four.
We also work on exam technique — teaching children how to manage their time, when to move on from a difficult question, and how to check their work effectively. A realistic preparation timeline for St Michael's typically begins 12 to 18 months before the exam, with the intensity increasing in the final term. Starting later is possible, but it requires a more concentrated programme and leaves less room to address gaps as they emerge.
Supporting the Whole Family Through the 11+ Process
The 11+ process is not just demanding for children — it places real pressure on families too. Managing preparation alongside school, extracurricular commitments, and the emotional weight of high-stakes testing requires careful pacing. One of the most common mistakes families make is front-loading preparation with too much material too early, leading to burnout before the exam arrives.
A well-structured programme builds gradually, with regular short sessions rather than intensive cramming. Children need to feel that progress is visible and that effort is being recognised — not just measured against a distant outcome. At Leading Tuition, we keep parents informed throughout the process so that you always have a clear picture of where your daughter stands and what the next steps are.
It's also worth being honest with your daughter about what the process involves. Children who understand why they're working hard, and who feel supported rather than pressured, consistently perform better on the day than those who have been pushed without context or encouragement.
Still weighing up timing, the faith criteria or how St Michael's compares with other Barnet options? Our expert 11+ tutors work with families across North Finchley and Barnet on a plan built around this school's actual test and deadlines, not a generic 11+ course.

Frequently Asked Questions about the St Michael's Catholic Grammar School 11+
When should we start preparing for the St Michael's entrance exam?
For most families, beginning 12 to 18 months before the exam — typically in Year 4 or early Year 5 — gives enough time to build skills properly without burning out. Starting in Year 5 is still workable, but it requires a more focused and consistent programme. What matters most is not just when you start, but whether the preparation is well-structured and targeted to the specific demands of the St Michael's test.
How do we keep our daughter motivated over such a long preparation period?
Motivation tends to hold up best when children can see their own progress clearly. Short, regular sessions are more effective than long, infrequent ones, and building in genuine breaks — including periods where exam preparation steps back entirely — prevents the fatigue that undermines performance. Framing preparation as skill-building rather than constant testing also helps children stay engaged rather than anxious.
Are practice papers on their own enough to prepare for St Michael's?
Practice papers are a valuable part of preparation, but they are not sufficient on their own. Without understanding why answers are wrong and how to approach question types differently, children tend to repeat the same mistakes. Effective preparation combines skills work, targeted practice, and regular review of errors — across all four of the school's papers.
Our daughter is applying to more than one grammar school — how do we manage that?
Many families in North London apply to several selective schools simultaneously, and the exams often fall within a short window in the autumn of Year 6. Every school sets its own test and its own registration form, so preparation has to cover the overlap - most selective schools assess English and Mathematics - while also targeting each school's specific format. If your list includes Queen Elizabeth's School or The Henrietta Barnett School, it is also worth understanding how differently those two schools disclose results before the Common Application Form deadline, covered in our guide to ranking QE Boys and Henrietta Barnett on the CAF.
What is St Michael's Published Admission Number, and how are places decided if the school is oversubscribed?
St Michael's Published Admission Number for Year 7 is 128. When the school is oversubscribed by candidates who meet its main faith criteria, places go first to baptised, practising Catholic girls who are looked after or previously looked after, then to practising Catholic girls in receipt of the Pupil Premium (capped at 32 places), then to all other practising Catholic girls in rank order of test score. Wider criteria only apply if fewer than 175 girls qualify under those three groups, which the school's own policy describes as historically unlikely.
When do applications for September 2027 entry open and close at St Michael's?
The school's own Supplementary Information Form opened on 14 April 2026 and closed at 4pm on 7 July 2026; any Certificate of Baptism and Certificate of Catholic Practice had to reach the school by the same deadline. That is separate from the Local Authority secondary transfer application every family must also submit - for Barnet residents, the council's own deadline for on-time applications is 31 October 2026. Missing either deadline can mean missing the school's process entirely for the cycle, so both need tracking independently.
Does St Michael's Catholic Grammar School set a catchment area or distance requirement?
Distance to the school only becomes relevant as the very last tie-break, used only when two or more candidates are still equally ranked after every entrance-test paper has been compared, and it is measured “as the crow flies” using Barnet Council's own mapping system rather than by road distance or travel time. The separate Local Authority form follows the council's own address rules, which the overseas section above sets out.
Is Barnet Council's application deadline the same as St Michael's own registration deadline?
No, and confusing the two is a common mistake. St Michael's own Supplementary Information Form and supporting Catholic documents were due by 4pm on 7 July 2026 - missing that meant the school could not invite your daughter to sit its test at all. The separate Local Authority form, which ranks your preferred schools for Barnet Council, has its own published deadline of 31 October 2026 for this cycle. Both forms are required, and completing one does not substitute for the other.
How can Leading Tuition help with preparation for the St Michael's Catholic Grammar School entrance test?
Our expert 11+ tutors work with girls across North Finchley and the wider Barnet area on all four papers St Michael's sets - Verbal Reasoning, Non-Verbal Reasoning, English and Mathematics - building the accuracy, comprehension and written expression skills the test rewards, alongside the exam technique needed to perform consistently across a single long sitting. Programmes are built around each child's own starting point and timeline, whether preparation begins in Year 4 or needs to be more concentrated closer to Year 6. Book a free consultation to discuss a plan for the St Michael's entrance test.
Can my daughter sit the St Michael's entrance test from abroad?
The school's Admissions 2027-28 page says “Applicants must be available to sit the tests in person at the School on this date.” The tests are by invitation only and all four papers are held on one day. The sittings for September 2025, September 2026 and September 2027 entry were on Friday 13 September 2024, Friday 12 September 2025 and Friday 11 September 2026. Applications had to be completed and submitted by 4pm on a Tuesday in early July in each of those years, so a family abroad has two dates to plan around: early July for the application and a Friday in mid-September for the sitting.
Can our priest abroad email the Certificate of Catholic Practice to St Michael's?
The school's Admissions 2027-28 page says “We do not accept electronic or emailed copies of the Certificate of Catholic Practice”. For a girl applying as a Practising Catholic, the original paper signed version must reach the School Office by the 4pm deadline, “either in person or by post”, and the school recommends a tracking service and proof of posting. The certificate should be dated within 3 months of the date of application. The baptism certificate is uploaded online, and the policy adds: “If the child was baptised overseas and the Certificate of Baptism in the Catholic Church is in a language other than English a translation into English must be provided.”
What does an address outside the UK do to my daughter's priority at St Michael's?
The policy's Year 7 criteria use Home Address, “the address where the child is normally resident”, as the last tie-break. Barnet Council's page says that for a September 2027 secondary transfer you need to be living in Barnet or have a link Barnet address where you intend to take up residency by the start of the school year. If you are living abroad at the time of application, your overseas address is used for distance, which determines waiting-list position at oversubscribed schools that give priority to children who live the closest; the distance is recalculated to your UK address once you have arrived and taken up residence locally. Ask the school how an address abroad is treated at that tie-break.
Can a family abroad appeal a St Michael's decision online?
The school's appeals page, headed for the 2026-27 round, says “All appeals will be heard online which has the advantage that your appeal can be heard from your home or place of work.” For September 2027 entry the admissions policy sets the last day for lodging an appeal at 4pm on 31 March 2027. The appeals page also says the grounds must be given when the form is lodged, and recommends including any evidence with it. A family abroad should confirm in writing that the same arrangement applies to its own appeal.
