About Stretford Grammar School

Stretford Grammar School is a selective state co-educational grammar school located at Granby Road, Stretford, M32 8JB, in the borough of Trafford in Greater Manchester. It has 956 pupils according to the Department for Education's Get Information about Schools register, its intended admission number for September 2027 is 160, and it offers places to both boys and girls. This co-educational status distinguishes it from the single-sex grammar schools elsewhere in the Trafford consortium.

Ofsted's overall rating is Good; its most recent inspection was on 20 March 2024. The school teaches pupils aged 11 to 18, Years 7 to 13, and has a sixth form.

Stretford Grammar School is a member of the Trafford Grammar School Consortium, which also includes Altrincham Grammar School for Boys, Altrincham Grammar School for Girls, Sale Grammar School and Urmston Grammar School. The consortium operates a shared entrance examination, run in partnership with GL Assessment for the 14 September 2026 test, so families who wish to apply to several consortium schools sit the test just once.

The Trafford Consortium 11+ Entrance Examination

The Trafford consortium 11+ sat on Monday 14 September 2026, for entry in September 2027, is run in partnership with GL Assessment and consists of two papers, each approximately one hour in length. It is the last GL paper in the consortium's arrangements: for entry to Year 7 from 2028 the test provider will be FSCE. The two papers together assess verbal, non-verbal and mathematics skills through a range of different types of questions. Each child sat the test at one allocated test centre, and the school recommended choosing the consortium school closest to the home address.

Stretford Grammar's minimum qualifying score is 334. Reaching it qualifies a child but is not an offer of a place. The school's admissions policy for September 2027 also provides an automatic review for pupil premium candidates scoring 324 to 333 (inclusive), whose score is overturned to 334R, and a local review for other candidates scoring 324 to 333; the local review decision is notified by post after 31 October 2026, and parents awaiting it are advised to name Stretford Grammar School on the Common Application Form. If more children qualify than there are places (the intended admission number for September 2027 is 160), the school awards them in this order: looked-after and previously looked-after children; children who have been in state care outside England and ceased to be in state care through adoption; applicants living in the school's catchment area (defined at the fifth criterion below) who receive pupil premium or service premium; children with a sibling in Years 7 to 11 at the school in September 2027; children living in the school's catchment area (postcodes M32, M33, M41, M17, M15 and M16, plus M21); applicants living outside that catchment area who receive pupil premium or service premium; and then children who live nearest the school, measured in a direct straight line. Within each criterion, places go to the children who live nearest the school.

Registration for the test opened at midday on Thursday 23 April 2026 and closed at midday on Friday 19 June 2026 via the consortium portal at traffordgl.applicaa.com. The school's FAQ says that if the closing date is missed, the next examination date will be after National Allocation Day, 1 March 2027. Families must also name Stretford Grammar as a preference on their Common Application Form (CAF), which in Trafford must be returned to Trafford Council by 31 October 2026; families outside Trafford should check their own authority's return date. Results will be communicated to parents before 31 October 2026, as soon as they are available, and an email advises when they can be viewed on the Admissions Portal; the school asks parents not to contact it requesting results, as this may cause delays.

What the 2026 GL Assessment Paper Covered

Verbal Reasoning covers a range of different types of questions. The school says they may include questions relating to word choice, knowledge of words and their meanings and how words relate to each other, as well as verbal comprehension skills.

Non-Verbal Reasoning covers non-verbal ability skills. The school says the questions may relate to relationships between shapes and sequences of shapes, identifying common features from a set of figures and applying them to a new figure, codes and spatial awareness.

Mathematics questions, the school says, generally cover content taught in schools up to the start of Year 6, and the areas assessed typically include aspects of number, measurement, geometry and statistics. Some questions may involve using current mathematical skills to solve mathematical problems. These are the question types of the GL paper sat on 14 September 2026; the content changes from the September 2027 paper.

What Changes When FSCE Replaces GL Assessment

The three question types described above belong to the GL paper, and that paper now has an end date. Following a tender under the Procurement Act 2023, the Trafford consortium has appointed Future Stories Community Enterprise (FSCE) as its admissions test provider for entry to Year 7 from September 2028. FSCE is a not-for-profit subsidiary of Reading School, and its papers are already used by twelve grammar schools and consortia nationally.

For a family targeting Stretford Grammar, the paper a child sits depends on their year group. A child in Year 6 during 2026-27 sat the GL paper on 14 September 2026, for entry in September 2027. A child in Year 5 sits the first FSCE paper in September 2027, for entry in 2028. A child in Year 4 sits an FSCE paper in the latter part of the summer term of Year 5, during 2028, because the consortium is moving the test date earlier for entry from 2029 onwards.

The subject content moves with the provider. From the September 2027 paper the test draws on the Key Stage 2 English and mathematics national curriculum up to the end of Year 5, in place of verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning and mathematics.

How Places at Stretford Grammar Are Awarded

Stretford Grammar is one of three co-educational grammar schools in the Trafford consortium, alongside Sale Grammar School and Urmston Grammar, offering places to both boys and girls. The school's admissions policy gives priority to successful candidates living in its catchment area: the postcodes M32, M33, M41, M17, M15 and M16 (both within Trafford and Manchester), and M21 as the next closest postcode to the school.

Reaching the qualifying score of 334 is not an offer of a place: if more children qualify than the 160 places in the school's intended admission number for September 2027, the oversubscription criteria decide who is offered one.

Families should read the school's admissions policy closely: its published criteria rank qualifying applicants by category and then by straight-line distance from home to the school. The qualifying score of 334 applies to the GL paper sat on 14 September 2026 for September 2027 entry; for the FSCE paper from September 2028 entry, check the school's admissions pages for that year's score. A tutor who knows the paper your child will sit can set a realistic target from the outset.

Amazing tutors!

We arranged maths and English tuition ahead of GCSEs and both tutors were brilliant. My daughter's grades improved, and by results day she achieved two grades higher than in her mock exams.

How Leading Tuition Prepares Children for Stretford Grammar

Leading Tuition works with families across Stretford, Sale, Old Trafford, Chorlton, Didsbury, Urmston and the wider Greater Manchester area to prepare children for the Trafford consortium entrance test. Our preparation is personalised from the start and built around the paper your child will sit.

We begin every engagement with a diagnostic mock assessment covering the areas the test assesses. This establishes an accurate baseline across the test areas, identifies the question types most in need of attention, and allows us to set a realistic score target based on your child's learning trajectory. The diagnostic informs a structured weekly programme that allocates time in proportion to the gains available.

Mathematics sessions extend curriculum knowledge and develop exam-specific technique for multi-step and word problems.

As test day approaches, we move to full-paper timed practice under realistic exam conditions. Children who have completed multiple full timed papers before test day arrive with the confidence and stamina to perform at their best. Tutors provide written feedback after each mock, and parents receive regular progress summaries throughout.

Stretford Grammar and the Other Trafford Consortium Schools

Stretford Grammar School sits within the Trafford Grammar School Consortium alongside four other selective state schools. Because all five schools used the same GL Assessment two-paper examination on the same date, families completed one application form, chose one test centre and stated which of the schools should receive the result. Registration closed at midday on Friday 19 June 2026, and one application form covered all five schools.

Understanding how Stretford Grammar compares to its consortium partners helps families prioritise their Common Application Form (CAF) preferences. Altrincham Grammar School for Boys and Altrincham Grammar School for Girls are single-sex schools, boys only and girls only respectively. Each school publishes its own admissions policy, so families should check their postcode against each school's policy.

Sale Grammar School is also co-educational and is located on Marsland Road, Sale. A child can pass the entrance exam for one consortium school but not the others, because the standardised score may differ between schools. Urmston Grammar is co-educational and is located on Newton Road, Urmston (M41 5UG).

When planning which schools to list on the CAF, families should check each school's admissions criteria; if a child passes more than one grammar school entrance exam, the school asks parents to rank them in their preferred order. Each consortium school publishes its own admissions policy and qualifying criteria, and a child may achieve a different qualifying score for each school even though they sat only one examination. Our 11+ Tuition specialists can advise on consortium application strategy as part of an initial consultation, helping families make well-informed decisions across all five schools.

Arrangements move between cycles, so confirm them with the school before you rely on them.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should we start preparing for the Stretford Grammar 11+?

Year 4 or early Year 5, but what to prepare now depends on the year group. The intended admission number for September 2027 is 160 and reaching the qualifying score is not an offer of a place, so early, steady preparation matters. A child in Year 6 sat the GL paper on 14 September 2026, and the school says results will be communicated to parents before 31 October 2026. A child in Year 5 sits an FSCE paper in September 2027, and a child in Year 4 sits one in the latter part of the summer term of Year 5, so for both the work should shift towards Key Stage 2 English and mathematics.

What is the qualifying score for Stretford Grammar School?

For September 2027 entry, Stretford Grammar's minimum qualifying score is 334. Reaching 334 is not an offer of a place. If more children qualify than there are places, they are awarded by the school's oversubscription criteria and, within each criterion, to the children who live nearest the school. A child may achieve a different qualifying score for each consortium school even though they sat only one examination.

What does the Stretford Grammar 11+ exam cover?

For entry in September 2027, two GL Assessment papers of about an hour each, covering verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning and mathematics, sat on Monday 14 September 2026. Registration at traffordgl.applicaa.com ran from midday 23 April to midday 19 June 2026. That is the last GL paper: from entry in September 2028 the consortium's provider is Future Stories Community Enterprise, and the test draws on Key Stage 2 English and mathematics to the end of Year 5 instead.

How competitive is Stretford Grammar School?

The intended admission number for September 2027 is 160, and reaching the qualifying score of 334 is not an offer of a place: if more children qualify than there are places, the school's oversubscription criteria decide, and children who live nearest the school are offered places first within each criterion. It is a co-educational grammar school; Ofsted's overall rating is Good and its most recent inspection was on 20 March 2024.
