Wirral has six selective grammar schools offering Year 7 places for September 2027 to children who meet the required standard in the 2026 entrance assessments. Four schools — Calday Grange Grammar School, West Kirby Grammar School, Wirral Grammar School for Boys and Wirral Grammar School for Girls — operate as the Wirral Grammar Schools Consortium, sharing a single entrance assessment, which this guide calls the Wirral Admissions Test (Quest Assessments calls it the Wirral 11+ Assessment). Two Catholic grammar schools, Upton Hall School FCJ and St Anselm's College, run entirely separate entrance processes with their own application forms, registration deadlines and entrance examinations. Understanding the distinction between these two groups is the single most important step in planning your child's application.

Checked September 2026

Wirral Council's admissions timetable and grammar assessment page give these dates: consortium assessment 15 September 2026, results 21 October 2026, applications 31 October 2026. Upton Hall's 2027 policy set its exam for 19 September 2026 and St Anselm's 2027 entry policy set registration to close on 31 July 2026. The Quest guide says each paper lasts about 50 minutes.

How does the Wirral grammar school system work in 2026?

Wirral's selective education system is structured around two distinct clusters. The larger group is the Wirral Grammar Schools Consortium, which brings together four non-Catholic grammar schools under a shared admissions test administered by Wirral Local Authority. A child who registers for the Wirral Admissions Test is automatically eligible to be considered for all four consortium schools — they sit the test just once, and parents then name their preferred school or schools on the local authority preference form once results arrive on 21 October 2026.

The second cluster comprises two Catholic grammar schools — Upton Hall School FCJ for girls and St Anselm's College for boys — which sit entirely outside the consortium. Each runs its own registration process through the school directly, sets its own application deadline (Upton Hall's was 10 July 2026 and St Anselm's was 31 July 2026, both after the consortium registration closed on 1 June 2026), and uses its own entrance examination. A child applying to one or both Catholic schools must complete separate applications and sit separate exams in addition to, or instead of, the Wirral Admissions Test. The six schools are therefore governed by two different sets of arrangements.

What is the Wirral Admissions Test and which schools use it?

The Wirral Admissions Test is the shared selective entrance exam used by the four consortium grammar schools. For 2027 Year 7 entry, the test is provided by Quest Assessments, whose assessments Calday Grange Grammar School's website describes as designed to ensure schools assess children fairly. The four schools' FAQs say they moved to a new test provider but kept the same overall style and format, including the areas assessed and their relative weightings, for this first year, and Quest publishes free familiarisation booklets for maths, verbal reasoning and non-verbal reasoning.

Registration for the Wirral Admissions Test is run through Wirral Council's online registration for selective assessments. For 2027 entry, registration opened on 1 May 2026 and closed at 12 noon on 1 June 2026 (Wirral Council's admissions timetable and the Quest guide list 31 May 2026). After the closing date, no new registrations are accepted except for families who have moved into the Wirral area after the deadline, who must apply using a paper form. There is no facility to re-sit the test: the council says it can only be taken once, and a child who is absent or unwell on the day is invited to another assessment session.

All children taking the Wirral Admissions Test do so at a test venue; Wirral Council said parents would be told which venue their child would attend by the end of August 2026, and the test was scheduled for Tuesday 15 September 2026. Scores are age-standardised after the papers are marked, so younger children within the school year are not disadvantaged relative to those born earlier in the academic year.

What do the Wirral 11+ exam papers cover?

The Wirral Admissions Test consists of two papers taken on the same day, each approximately 50 minutes long: paper one covers verbal reasoning, and paper two covers mathematics and non-verbal reasoning. Both papers are entirely multiple choice, with children recording answers on a separate OMR (Optical Mark Recognition) answer sheet. The three subject areas tested across both papers are verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning and mathematics.

Verbal reasoning questions assess a child's ability to identify patterns, relationships and logic in written information — words, letters, numbers and sequences. Non-verbal reasoning questions use shapes, patterns and spatial relationships rather than words or numbers, making them less dependent on vocabulary. The mathematics questions are set around the curriculum children already learn at school: the Quest guide says the test is built to assess genuine understanding of the curriculum. The Quest guide says the best preparation is a strong grounding in what your child is already learning at school, combined with wide reading, and suggests working through its free familiarisation booklets at a relaxed pace.

The two test scores are age-adjusted and added together, and each school's admissions policy sets the standard: at Wirral Grammar School for Girls, for example, pupils who achieve a score higher than the required score are deemed to have achieved the grammar school standard. The four schools' FAQs say the standard required for a grammar school place has not changed with the new test provider.

How do the Catholic grammar schools differ from the consortium?

The two Catholic grammar schools in Wirral — Upton Hall School FCJ and St Anselm's College — differ from the consortium schools in several important ways that are rarely explained clearly on competitor websites.

Upton Hall School FCJ is a Roman Catholic grammar school for girls aged 11-18, offering 156 Year 7 places for September 2027. The school runs its own application and entrance examination, and parents also complete the Wirral Parental Preference Form for the local authority. Parents had to complete the school's own application form and submit it, together with a Catholic baptism certificate for baptised Catholic applicants, by Friday 10 July 2026 — after the consortium registration had closed on 1 June 2026; the school's site says applications for September 2027 are now closed. The entrance examination has two papers taken on the same morning, with a refreshment break between the papers: verbal reasoning, timed at 50 minutes, and English (comprehension, spelling, punctuation and grammar), timed at 45 minutes. Crucially, the subject areas tested are English and verbal reasoning — not the verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning and mathematics combination used in the Wirral Admissions Test. A child preparing purely for the consortium test will not have covered the English comprehension and grammar content that Upton Hall's papers include. Candidates must achieve the Qualifying Standard, which includes minimum standards in each part of the test, and 156 places are then offered in priority order, with baptised Roman Catholic girls given priority over non-Catholic applicants.

St Anselm's College is a Catholic grammar school and academy for boys aged 11 to 18 in Birkenhead. Its indicated admission number for Year 7 in September 2027 is 156. Its entrance process differs from the consortium's: the college's own entrance examination consists of three written papers in Verbal Reasoning, Maths and English, each an hour long, and the college says all papers are passed to external examiners for marking. A boy preparing only for the Wirral Admissions Test will not have covered the English paper, so targeted preparation for St Anselm's three papers matters if it is part of the application plan; the college publishes English and Maths sample papers on its website.

How many Year 7 places are available at each Wirral grammar school?

For 2027 entry, the four consortium schools collectively offer 740 Year 7 places, using West Kirby's 180 from its 2027/2028 policy. Calday Grange Grammar School, the boys' school in West Kirby, is the largest with 210 places. West Kirby Grammar School offers 180 places for girls (its 2027/2028 admissions policy gives 180, although the sentence in it names September 2026, and the consortium's FAQs say each school's published admission number stays the same unless formally consulted on). Wirral Grammar School for Girls also offers 180 places, while Wirral Grammar School for Boys, in Bebington, offers 170 places, making it the smallest of the four consortium schools.

Meeting the qualifying standard does not guarantee a place at a specific school: where a school is oversubscribed, it uses other criteria to decide who is offered places. Each school's published admissions policy sets out those other criteria.

The two Catholic grammar schools add a further 312 places: Upton Hall School FCJ offers 156 places, and St Anselm's College offers 156 places. Across all six Wirral grammar schools, that makes 1,052 Year 7 places for September 2027, using West Kirby's 180 from its 2027/2028 policy. For families considering both Catholic and non-Catholic options, the consortium's FAQs say testing at Upton Hall School FCJ and St Anselm's College is separate from the consortium's, and each of those schools runs its own registration.

What are the key dates for Wirral 11+ registration and results in 2026?

The timetable for the Wirral Admissions Test (consortium schools) for 2027 Year 7 entry runs as follows. Registration opened on 1 May 2026 and closed at 12 noon on 1 June 2026 (Wirral Council's grammar assessment page gives 12 noon on 1 June 2026; its admissions timetable and the Quest guide list 31 May 2026). The test itself was scheduled for Tuesday 15 September 2026 at a designated test venue (parents were to be told their child's venue by the end of August 2026). Results are sent to parents on Wednesday 21 October 2026. All parents must apply for a school place by Saturday 31 October 2026 and should include at least one grammar school; if a child does not meet the grammar school standard, the grammar school preference is withdrawn. Full details of the assessment process are published on the Wirral Council grammar school admissions page. Wirral Council sends email offers to online applicants on Monday 1 March 2027.

If a child is absent or unwell on test day, Wirral Council asks parents not to bring them but to email secondaryplaces@wirral.gov.uk with the child's name and date of birth; the child will be invited to another assessment session. The assessment can only be taken once.

For the Catholic grammar schools, the timetable differs significantly. Upton Hall School FCJ's application form deadline was 10 July 2026, with the main exam sitting on Saturday 19 September 2026 and a second sitting on Wednesday 23 September 2026 for children who missed the first through illness and for applicants with special needs or disabilities. Results from Upton Hall are sent to parents by Friday 23 October 2026 — two days after consortium results. St Anselm's College runs its own separate timetable: its online registration deadline was Friday 31 July 2026, and it says results reach parents by letter or email before the local authority preference form deadline at the end of October. Applicants to both Catholic schools must also return the local authority preference form by 31 October 2026, the same deadline as the consortium schools, and Wirral Council coordinates place allocations across secondary schools.

Families applying to schools in both clusters had to manage separate registration processes: the consortium's closed on 1 June 2026, Upton Hall's on 10 July 2026 and St Anselm's on 31 July 2026. The council registration for the consortium and the school-direct applications for Upton Hall and St Anselm's are separate processes.

How are Wirral grammar school places allocated?

For the four consortium schools, the allocation process begins after results are released in October 2026. Children must still meet the grammar school standard, and each school's admissions policy sets out how places are allocated. Children who meet the standard are considered for the consortium schools their parents name on the preference form. Where a school receives more qualifying applications than it has places, it allocates using its published oversubscription criteria. Each policy sets its own order: Wirral Grammar School for Girls, for example, lists looked-after children, a valid medical reason, up to 15 places for girls eligible for Targeted Free School Meals, siblings, daughters of staff, and then distance from home.

Passing the qualifying standard does not guarantee a place. Families who are not local to Wirral should note that Calday Grange Grammar School says it welcomes applications from beyond Wirral (naming Chester, North Wales, Liverpool and Warrington) and West Kirby Grammar School says students regularly apply from those areas and beyond; the council says families living outside Wirral but in England must apply through their own local authority, and Calday adds that applicants from other parts of England must also complete a Wirral Parental Preference Form.

For Upton Hall School FCJ, candidates must achieve the Qualifying Standard, which includes minimum standards in each part of the test. Within the qualifying pool, places are allocated in priority order: looked-after children first, then baptised Roman Catholic girls eligible for free school meals, then baptised Roman Catholic girls, then daughters of staff, then non-Catholic girls eligible for free school meals who wish to receive a Catholic education, and finally other non-Catholic girls whose parents wish them to have a Roman Catholic education. Where a category is oversubscribed, places go to children with the highest exam scores; a tie is broken by proximity to the school.

How should my child prepare for the Wirral 11+ in 2026?

The Wirral Admissions Test for September 2027 entry was scheduled for 15 September 2026, so the next consortium round is for children now in Year 5, who join Year 7 in September 2028: Wirral Council's timetable lists registration from 1 May 2027 to 31 May 2027 and assessments expected in September 2027; check the council's grammar assessment page for the exact closing time. For most children, structured weekly tutoring alongside regular independent practice produces the strongest results. The three subject areas in the Wirral Admissions Test — verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning and mathematics — each require different preparation strategies.

Verbal reasoning covers a wide variety of question types, from word analogies and letter sequences to logic-based problems. Children benefit from steady exposure to the verbal reasoning question types from an early stage rather than leaving preparation to the final few weeks, and the Quest guide says short, regular learning is more effective than long sessions. Non-verbal reasoning similarly benefits from practice with pattern recognition and spatial reasoning tasks. The mathematics content is curriculum-based, so solid arithmetic and problem-solving skills are important.

Children applying to Upton Hall School FCJ need separate English preparation covering reading comprehension, grammar, punctuation and spelling, in addition to the VR work they will need for the consortium test — but not the non-verbal reasoning and maths content required for the consortium. Children applying to St Anselm's College need preparation for its three written papers in English, Maths and Verbal Reasoning, which differ from the consortium's multiple-choice papers. Families applying to schools across both clusters should ensure that their preparation plan explicitly accounts for these format differences rather than assuming a single programme will cover all applications. Frequently Asked Questions

Which schools are in the Wirral Grammar Schools Consortium?

The Wirral Grammar Schools Consortium comprises four non-Catholic selective schools: Calday Grange Grammar School (boys, West Kirby, 210 places), West Kirby Grammar School (girls, 180 places per its 2027/2028 policy), Wirral Grammar School for Boys (Bebington, 170 places) and Wirral Grammar School for Girls (180 places). These four schools share a single entrance exam — the Wirral Admissions Test — so your child sits the test once to be considered for any or all of them. For 2027 entry the test is provided by Quest Assessments and was scheduled for 15 September 2026.

What are the Wirral Admissions Test dates for 2026?

The Wirral Admissions Test for September 2027 Year 7 entry was scheduled for Tuesday 15 September 2026. Registration with Wirral Local Authority opened on 1 May 2026 and closed at 12 noon on 1 June 2026. Results are sent to parents on Wednesday 21 October 2026. All parents must apply for a school place by Saturday 31 October 2026; a grammar school preference is withdrawn if the child does not meet the grammar school standard. Wirral Council sends email offers to online applicants on 1 March 2027. If your child was absent or unwell on test day, email secondaryplaces@wirral.gov.uk: the council says your child will be invited to another assessment session, and the assessment can only be taken once.

What subjects does the Wirral 11+ exam cover?

The Wirral Admissions Test (used by the four consortium schools) consists of two papers, each approximately 50 minutes long, covering verbal reasoning (paper one) and mathematics and non-verbal reasoning (paper two). All questions are multiple choice and answers go on an OMR answer sheet. For 2027 entry the assessment is provided by Quest Assessments. Scores are age-standardised so that younger children within the year group are not disadvantaged. Each school's admissions policy sets the required standard, and the four schools' FAQs say that standard has not changed with the new provider.

How many Year 7 places are available at each Wirral grammar school?

For 2027 entry: Calday Grange Grammar School 210 places; West Kirby Grammar School 180 places (per its 2027/2028 policy); Wirral Grammar School for Boys 170 places; Wirral Grammar School for Girls 180 places — a consortium total of 740 places. Upton Hall School FCJ offers a further 156 Catholic girls' places and St Anselm's College offers 156 Catholic boys' places, bringing the total across all six Wirral grammar schools to 1,052 Year 7 places (with West Kirby at 180 per its 2027/2028 policy).

How do the Catholic grammar schools differ from the consortium schools?

Upton Hall School FCJ and St Anselm's College are not members of the Wirral Grammar Schools Consortium and use completely different entrance processes. Upton Hall (Catholic girls') uses its own entrance examination of two papers, verbal reasoning (50 minutes) and English (45 minutes) — different subjects from the consortium's Quest Assessments test. St Anselm's College (Catholic boys', 156 places) uses its own entrance examination of three written papers in English, Maths and Verbal Reasoning, each an hour long. Both schools have their own registration deadlines (Upton Hall's application form deadline was 10 July 2026 and St Anselm's was 31 July 2026) and exam dates separate from the consortium timetable.

When should I register for the Wirral 11+ in 2026?

For the Wirral Admissions Test (consortium schools, 2027 entry), registration opened on 1 May 2026 and closed at 12 noon on 1 June 2026 through Wirral Local Authority's online portal. Late registration is only accepted for children who have moved into Wirral after the closing date. For Upton Hall School FCJ, the school's own application form deadline was 10 July 2026 — and Catholic baptism certificates had to be submitted by that date too. St Anselm's College runs its own separate registration process, with an online registration deadline of 31 July 2026. Families applying to both clusters had to manage two independent processes. For September 2028 entry, the council's timetable lists registration from 1 May to 31 May 2027.
