Its Engineering interviews are rigorous, problem-led, and mathematically demanding, but the atmosphere is known to be intellectually engaged rather than intimidating. Emma Engineering supervisors are looking for students who can apply mathematical principles to physical problems they have not seen before, reason about engineering systems at a conceptual level, and persist intelligently through difficulty — all qualities that the Cambridge Engineering course demands and develops over four years.
Engineering at Cambridge is a broad, integrated discipline in its first two years. Students study mechanics, thermodynamics, structures, electrical and information engineering, and mathematics simultaneously before specialising in Year 3. Emma supervisors are therefore assessing a wide range of scientific and mathematical foundations, not just expertise in a single engineering sub-discipline. Candidates who have thought about Engineering from a narrow perspective — as only about programming, or only about design, or only about a specific industry — often find Cambridge Engineering interviews broader than expected.
Engineering applicants at Emmanuel typically have two interviews. Each lasts approximately 25 to 35 minutes and focuses heavily on problem-solving. Cambridge Engineering is among the most mathematically demanding undergraduate programmes in the country, and Emma supervisors will assess your mathematical fluency directly at interview. Be comfortable with vectors, calculus, differential equations at a basic level, and the mathematical description of physical systems.
Prepare for applied problem-solving: mechanics (Newton's laws, equilibrium, moments), basic circuits (Kirchhoff's laws, Ohm's law), thermodynamics (energy conservation, heat transfer), and fluid mechanics at a conceptual level. You should be able to set up a physical problem mathematically, identify the relevant principles, and reason through the solution — even if the algebra becomes complicated.
Think about real engineering systems with analytical precision. If you see a bridge, a car engine, or a power grid, practise thinking about what forces, energy flows, and physical principles are at work. This habit of mind — connecting physical phenomena to underlying principles — is exactly what Cambridge Engineering supervisors reward.
Work through ESAT past papers systematically. The ESAT tests the same applied mathematical and physical reasoning that Emma supervisors probe at interview, and strong ESAT preparation directly builds interview readiness.

It does not have a formal quota for state school applicants, but it has historically recruited a higher proportion of state school students than the Cambridge average. The academic assessment criteria at interview are consistent across all applicants — what matters is the quality of your scientific reasoning, not your school background.
The ESAT is the primary shortlisting tool for Cambridge Engineering, and Emma uses ESAT scores as a significant factor in interview decisions. Strong performance — particularly on the Physics and Mathematics sections — is important for securing an interview invitation. Prepare for the ESAT from early October and treat it as integral to your Emma application.
Further Mathematics is not formally required but is strongly advantageous. Many Emma Engineering applicants have Further Maths, and it provides a stronger mathematical foundation for both the interview and the course. If you are not studying Further Maths, ensure your core Mathematics is genuinely fluent and that you are comfortable with the mechanics content of A-level Physics.
Insufficient preparation for applied mathematical problem-solving under pressure.
