King's History supervisors are not looking for students who can produce polished essays on familiar topics; they are looking for students who think historically with genuine rigour and who engage with uncertainty, contested evidence, and difficult questions without simplifying them.
The Cambridge History course is broad: it covers British, European, American, and world history from the medieval period to the twentieth century, and it places strong emphasis on historical theory and historiography as well as empirical history. King's supervisors value breadth of historical awareness alongside depth of engagement, and candidates who have thought about history only within the narrow confines of their A-level topics may find interviews ranging more widely than expected.
History applicants at King's typically have two interviews. Each lasts approximately 25 to 35 minutes. King's History interviews often involve source analysis: you may be given a primary source — a speech, a document, a visual source — and asked to discuss what it reveals and what it cannot tell us. You may also be asked to engage with a historical argument, evaluate a historiographical claim, or reason about a counterfactual question. King's supervisors are known for the depth of their intellectual engagement and for pushing candidates beyond their comfort zone with genuine curiosity rather than intimidation.
Oxford History applicants (single honours) are not required to sit a written admissions test — the HAT (History Aptitude Test) was discontinued and has not been replaced for single-honours History. Cambridge History applicants are similarly shortlisted primarily on academic record, personal statement, and submitted written work. King's supervisors read submitted essays carefully and may draw on them in the interview.

The interview is not a test of coverage, which is exactly why it is uncomfortable: you are asked to reason historically about material you do not know, in front of someone who knows it very well indeed.

Practise the habit of reading a source and asking: what does this document reveal? What does its author want us to think? What is absent or distorted? How would I use this alongside other evidence to construct a reliable account? This kind of critical engagement with evidence is exactly what King's History supervisors are assessing.
Read historiographically in at least one area. History is a contested discipline, and King's supervisors value candidates who understand that historians disagree and who can engage with that disagreement analytically. Reading two historians who offer different interpretations of a significant event — understanding what each is arguing, why they differ, and how you would evaluate their cases — is excellent interview preparation.
Your personal statement and submitted essays are significant. King's supervisors may begin by asking about something you wrote — a claim you made, a text you cited, an argument you constructed — and probe it with follow-up questions. Be ready to discuss and defend what you have written with genuine depth.

You should be prepared to discuss your A-level periods in depth and to engage with historical questions about periods you know less well. The ability to reason historically — to engage with sources, evaluate arguments, and think about causation and contingency — matters more than comprehensive period coverage.
Very important. Cambridge History applicants submit a piece of written work, and King's supervisors read it carefully. The quality of your historical argument, your engagement with evidence, and the clarity of your writing all contribute to their assessment. The interview may draw on your submitted work, so read it again before your interview and be prepared to discuss and defend what you wrote.
Possibly, particularly if you have mentioned specific historians in your personal statement or written work. King's supervisors value candidates who understand that historical interpretation is contested and who can engage with historiographical debates analytically. You do not need a comprehensive knowledge of historiography, but engaging with two or three historians who disagree about something significant will enrich your interview performance considerably.
Engage with the question using the historical reasoning skills you have developed, not by trying to recall facts you do not have. History supervisors at King's are not primarily testing your factual coverage — they are testing your ability to think historically. A candidate who says 'I haven't studied this period, but thinking about what typically causes [X type of event]...' and then reasons carefully is demonstrating exactly the quality King's is looking for.

It is the second half of the question above, and the half candidates skip. Describing what a document says is A-level work; saying what it silently omits, and who is absent from it, is the historical thinking King's supervisors are listening for.
