Book a Free ConsultationNorth Halifax Grammar School, in Illingworth, Halifax, is a selective, co-educational state grammar school with academy status, offering 180 places in Year 7 each year. For September 2027 entry, the school sat the FSCE (Future Stories Community Enterprise) test jointly with The Crossley Heath School as the "Halifax Grammar Schools" on Saturday 19 September 2026, after registration ran from 20 March to 26 June 2026. This guide sets out the exact test format, every key date, how places are allocated (including the Priority Admissions Area), the school's officially published 2026 GCSE results, and how to prepare — verified directly against North Halifax Grammar School's own admissions pages and 2027 admissions policy, Calderdale Council's secondary admissions criteria, and the DfE's Get Information About Schools record and Ofsted's inspection page.
Checked September 2026
North Halifax Grammar School's admissions pages, its 2027 admissions policy and Calderdale Council's arrangements show the FSCE test was sat on 19 September 2026 and registration closed on 26 June 2026. Results reach parents by 16 October 2026 and the Common Application Form deadline is 31 October 2026.
North Halifax Grammar School opened as an academy converter on 1 June 2011. Today it is a co-educational academy on Moorbottom Road, Illingworth, Halifax, West Yorkshire (postcode HX2 9SU), with 1,207 pupils on roll aged 11 to 18.
Any child in Year 6 could register for the September 2027 entry test, regardless of which UK local authority they live in (registration closed on 26 June 2026) — North Halifax Grammar School has no fixed catchment area that excludes applicants, though (as explained below) a small proportion of places carry geographic priority. The school's joint-test partner, The Crossley Heath School, also offers 180 Year 7 places.

North Halifax Grammar School and The Crossley Heath School moved to the FSCE (Future Stories Community Enterprise) entrance test as their joint "Halifax Grammar Schools" admissions assessment. Confirmed directly on North Halifax Grammar School's own admissions pages and in Calderdale Council's admission arrangements (the two schools share one admissions test), the test has three papers: Papers 1 and 2 each cover English and Mathematics, and Paper 3 is Creative Writing. The test as a whole uses both multiple-choice and written-response questions; the English and Mathematics papers are marked by computer and age-standardised, and candidates are ranked in order of merit for English and Mathematics. Every candidate writes the Creative Writing paper on the same test day, but only candidates who meet the required standard on the English and Maths papers have it judged, by a trained panel of staff from the two schools rather than by computer.
There is no separate verbal reasoning or non-verbal reasoning paper under the FSCE format. All written elements are completed on the same day in September. Because North Halifax Grammar School and Crossley Heath run a joint registration and admissions process, parents registered through either school's website, and a candidate may only sit the admissions test once; it was held on 19 September 2026 — school preferences are then named on the Common Application Form, where either or both grammar schools must be included as one of the five preferences.
For families weighing the FSCE format against the GL Assessment or CEM tests used elsewhere in England, our FSCE 11+ guide explains how the format works across the schools now using it, and our Yorkshire grammar schools hub compares North Halifax against the other grammar schools in the North and West Yorkshire cluster.

Meeting the required standard in the FSCE test is not the same as securing a place — families must still name North Halifax Grammar School on their Common Application Form, submitted to their home local authority by 31 October 2026, for the school to be considered. The school states that there is no fixed pass mark: candidates must be in the top 510 places in order of merit to reach the required standard, and it cannot offer a place to a candidate outside the top 510. For dates at grammar and independent schools in the previous cycle, see our 11+ exam dates guide for 2025–2026.
North Halifax Grammar School's Published Admission Number (PAN) is 180 places for September 2027 entry. Because places at the school are typically oversubscribed, Calderdale Council's published admissions criteria set out a strict order in which places are allocated once a candidate has met the FSCE qualifying standard:
Where two or more candidates share the same order of merit for the final available place, priority goes first to siblings of current pupils, and then to the candidate living closest to the school, measured as a straight-line (GIS) distance from home to the school gate. This tie-break structure means that, outside the small Priority Admissions Area allocation, admission to North Halifax Grammar School is overwhelmingly determined by test performance rather than by where a family lives.
North Halifax Grammar School does not operate a hard catchment area that excludes out-of-area applicants — any child who registers and sits the FSCE test is eligible for a place if they meet the qualifying standard and score highly enough in the merit order. However, the school does maintain a Priority Admissions Area covering the Illingworth and Mixenden ward and the Ovenden ward of Halifax, and up to 10% of the 180 places are reserved for qualifying children living in this area, allocated ahead of the general merit order (but after looked-after children and Pupil Premium/Service Premium priority).
For the remaining places, location is irrelevant except as a final tie-break between candidates with the same order of merit. This means families outside Halifax can apply: Calderdale residents outside the Priority Admissions Area and children in any other UK local authority are eligible to apply, provided their child meets the required standard in the FSCE test.
North Halifax Grammar School's own 2026 GCSE results statement, published on the school's website, gives a detailed and specific picture of academic outcomes. The school's unvalidated Attainment 8 score for 2026 was 69.48; its validated 2025 score was 68.5, against the England state-school average of 46.1 — a gap of more than 22 points. The school's Progress 8 score for 2024 was +0.18.

The school reports that students attained an average grade 7 in 2026, with 33% at grades 8 and 9 and 74% at grades 6 to 9, and there were 179 entries each in English Language and Mathematics, with 128 entered for Biology, 127 for Chemistry and 128 for Physics. Ofsted's most recent inspection, carried out on 8 November 2023 and published 18 December 2023, rated the school Good overall across quality of education, behaviour and attitudes, personal development, and leadership and management, with the Sixth Form rated Outstanding. Because North Halifax Grammar School and The Crossley Heath School sit the same FSCE paper on the same day and each offer 180 Year 7 places, it is worth setting out what distinguishes the two schools. Structurally, the admissions process is joint: the same test, the same registration window and one joint registration process, although only North Halifax Grammar School has a Priority Admissions Area (Crossley Heath has none). The offer stage is where preferences matter: Calderdale makes only one offer of a place, determined by the order in which parents express their preferences, and either or both grammar schools must be included as one of the five preferences for a family to be considered.
Beyond the Priority Admissions Area, the admissions mechanics are shared. North Halifax Grammar School is based in Illingworth, with 1,207 pupils on roll and a Priority Admissions Area covering the Illingworth and Mixenden ward and the Ovenden ward. Families deciding between the two, or applying to both to maximise their chances within Calderdale's selective sector, should treat the FSCE test itself as identical preparation regardless of which school (or both) they ultimately hope to secure a place at.
Because the FSCE format tests only Key Stage 2 content up to the end of Year 5, and does not include verbal or non-verbal reasoning, the most effective preparation is built around genuine subject strength rather than drilling unfamiliar question types. For the English and Maths papers, focus on reading comprehension across a range of fiction and non-fiction texts, vocabulary breadth, spelling accuracy, and confident, accurate arithmetic applied to multi-step word problems covering the Year 5 curriculum — number and place value, fractions, decimals and percentages, measurement, geometry, and basic statistics. Because the English and Maths papers are marked by computer and age-standardised, accurate answers matter as much as raw content knowledge.
For the Creative Writing element, which is judged only for candidates who clear the qualifying standard on English and Maths, preparation should focus on planning a complete short piece within a fixed time limit, varying sentence structure and vocabulary, and building a habit of checking work for punctuation and spelling accuracy — since this component is judged by a panel of staff from the two schools rather than marked by computer. Because it is assessed only after the standardised papers, families should not divert preparation time away from English and Maths content in the hope of relying on a strong creative writing score alone.
Regular reading across varied genres and text types remains a reliable long-term preparation activity for the English components — the school's own advice is to develop strong reading habits by reading widely and deeply — and should ideally begin well before Year 6. The school also publishes free FSCE familiarisation guides for parents and children, and notes that the test content changes each year, so the guide is not definitive. For a broader introduction to the 11+ process generally, our guide on what the 11+ exam is provides useful background for families new to the selective school system.

North Halifax Grammar School has a Published Admission Number (PAN) of 180 places in Year 7 for September 2027 entry — the same number of places offered by its joint-test partner, The Crossley Heath School. Places are allocated first to looked-after and previously looked-after children, then to children eligible for Pupil Premium or Service Premium, then up to 10% to children living in the Priority Admissions Area, with remaining places awarded strictly by combined English and Mathematics merit order among candidates who meet the qualifying standard.
North Halifax Grammar School does not have a fixed catchment area in the traditional sense, but it does operate a Priority Admissions Area covering the Illingworth and Mixenden ward and the Ovenden ward of Halifax, to which up to 10% of the 180 places are allocated ahead of the main merit order. Families outside this area are not excluded — the large majority of places are awarded by combined English and Mathematics order of merit, with proximity to the school used only as a final tie-break between candidates with the same order of merit.
In the school's own 2026 GCSE results statement, North Halifax Grammar School recorded an unvalidated Attainment 8 score of 69.48 and 94% of pupils achieving grade 5 or above in English and Maths. Its validated 2025 Attainment 8 score was 68.5 against the England state-school average of 46.1, and its Progress 8 score for 2024 was +0.18. Students attained an average grade 7, with 33% at grades 8 and 9 and 74% at grades 6 to 9. The school's most recent Ofsted inspection, on 8 November 2023, rated it Good overall with an Outstanding sixth form.
