About Spalding Grammar School

Spalding Grammar School says it has served the young people of its local community for more than 400 years. Located on Priory Road, close to the town centre of Spalding, the school serves boys from the town itself and from the wide network of villages and parishes across South Lincolnshire. With 1,023 pupils on roll against a capacity of 1,070, Spalding Grammar is a boys’ school for ages 11 to 18 with a sixth form.

Ofsted’s inspection on 6 February 2024 graded the school Good overall, and Good for the quality of education, behaviour and attitudes, personal development, leadership and management, and sixth form provision. At GCSE, 75.2% of Spalding Grammar students who completed key stage 4 in summer 2025 achieved a grade 5 or higher in both English and Mathematics, against 45.4% across state schools in England — a result that substantially exceeds the national average (Department for Education, published April 2026). At A-Level, the school’s own results page gives an average grade of B per entry for 2024, across 128 students entered.

The school’s facilities reflect its growth from the Victorian era to the present day. Dedicated IT suites, a Drama Studio, a Business Studies Centre and Technology rooms that include Food Technology reflect Spalding Grammar’s commitment to providing a well-resourced learning environment that extends beyond purely academic provision. The school’s extracurricular programme is extensive, including chess, computing and engineering clubs, sports teams, school trips and the Duke of Edinburgh award.

Is Spalding Grammar Part of the Lincolnshire Grammar School Consortium?

Yes. Spalding Grammar School is a member of the Lincolnshire Consortium of Grammar Schools, which means it uses the shared GL Assessment 11+ entrance test along with 14 other selective schools across Lincolnshire. Boys applying to Spalding Grammar sit exactly the same two consortium papers as those applying to Bourne Grammar School, The King’s School Grantham, Kesteven and Grantham Girls’ School and other consortium members.

The consortium model means that families registering for Spalding Grammar need only register once, using the school’s online registration form (also available on its website), and the resulting score is valid for applications to any consortium school. Lincolnshire families can name up to four schools on the Common Application Form, in order of preference, and Lincolnshire County Council’s coordinated process allocates places; families outside Lincolnshire apply through their home local authority.

Spalding is home to two consortium grammar schools — Spalding Grammar (boys, Years 7–11; co-educational sixth form) and Spalding High School. Both schools use the same GL Assessment consortium test and the same qualifying threshold of 220. Families considering either school should be aware that they are separate schools, each named separately on the CAF, which allows Lincolnshire families up to four preferences in order.

What Does the GL Assessment 11+ Test Cover?

The Lincolnshire Consortium 11+ is provided by GL Assessment and comprises two papers, held in September 2026 on Friday 11 or Saturday 12 September and on Friday 18 or Saturday 19 September; the school’s 11+ FAQs say boys at Lincolnshire primary schools sit on the Saturdays and boys at schools outside Lincolnshire on the Fridays. There are two tests, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning with spatial awareness, and the Consortium says they are designed to identify potential and are not tests of attainment.

Paper 1 — Verbal Reasoning (VR): the paper is preceded by a ten-minute Preliminary Practice Test, and the answers to practice questions are neither marked nor taken into consideration.

Paper 2 — Non-Verbal and Spatial Reasoning (NVR/SR): the paper is divided into sections, each provided with a few practice questions whose answers are not marked. Both NVR and SR are multiple-choice, answered on an OMR sheet.

Scores are age-standardised. A boy born in August is not at a disadvantage relative to a September-born boy: the standardised score includes an age allowance, and a child’s age is determined by the date when the test is taken. The combined standardised total across both papers must reach 220 to qualify, but attaining the qualifying standard does not of itself guarantee admission to any individual school. If more than 150 boys qualify, the school’s 2027 admission policy considers qualifying boys who live in the designated transport area before those outside it and, if numbers still exceed 150, raises the aggregate score of 220 to contain the number of admissions. The qualifying score is local to Lincolnshire: 220 is set to identify the most able 25% of pupils in the age group in primary schools in the selective areas of Lincolnshire, so a threshold quoted by a family in another county tells you nothing about Lincolnshire.

What Are the 2026 Key Dates for Spalding Grammar Admissions?

For September 2027 Year 7 entry at Spalding Grammar School:

Registration opened: Wednesday 7 January 2026 Registration closed: Tuesday 31 March 2026 Lincolnshire County Council applications open: Monday 7 September 2026 Verbal Reasoning paper (Paper 1): Friday 11 or Saturday 12 September 2026 (the school’s 11+ FAQs say boys at Lincolnshire primary schools sit on the Saturdays and boys at schools outside Lincolnshire on the Fridays) Non-Verbal & Spatial Reasoning paper (Paper 2): Friday 18 or Saturday 19 September 2026 (the school’s 11+ FAQs say boys at Lincolnshire primary schools sit on the Saturdays and boys at schools outside Lincolnshire on the Fridays) Test results emailed to parents: Friday 9 October 2026 at 12:00 Common Application Form (CAF) national closing date: Saturday 31 October 2026; Lincolnshire accepts applications until 12 noon on 14 December 2026
  • National Offer Day: 1 March 2027

To apply, parents first had to complete Spalding Grammar’s own registration form, available on the school website, before the consortium’s deadline of 31 March 2026, which has now passed. The Consortium’s FAQs say a child who was ill on the test date can sit the test later by arrangement with the school, and that families who move into the area after testing can contact the relevant grammar school to arrange it. They must also submit the CAF to Lincolnshire County Council (or their home local authority if outside Lincolnshire) by the national closing date of 31 October 2026; Lincolnshire County Council accepts applications until 12 noon on 14 December 2026. Results are emailed to parents at 12:00 on 9 October 2026, ahead of the 31 October 2026 national closing date, so parents can confirm their school preferences on the CAF with the result in hand. For boys now in Year 5, who join Year 7 in September 2028, the school’s 11+ FAQs say registration information goes to parents of Year 5 boys via primary schools at the beginning of Term 3, and the school’s published term dates put the start of Term 3 on Tuesday 5 January 2027.

Registration closed on 31 March 2026, and the papers fell on consecutive Fridays and Saturdays

The Lincolnshire calendar put the registration deadline, 31 March 2026, months ahead of the assessment, and split the assessment itself across two Friday-and-Saturday pairs: 11 and 12 September, then 18 and 19 September 2026.

How Are Oversubscribed Places Allocated at Spalding Grammar?

When more qualifying boys apply to Spalding Grammar than there are 150 places, the school’s 2027 admission policy allocates places in this order:

  1. Qualified children whose Education, Health and Care Plan names the school, allocated first, then qualified looked-after and previously looked-after children, who have first priority among the remaining places
  2. Qualified boys who live within the designated transport area, defined as Spalding and the feeder parishes of South Lincolnshire, who are considered before those living outside it

The designated transport area is Lincolnshire County Council’s transport area for the school: it sets oversubscription priority under the school’s policy, and it is the area within which the county provides free home-school transport for eligible children. Under the policy, qualifying boys living within the area are considered before those living outside it when the school is oversubscribed. Qualifying boys from outside the designated area are considered in score order, highest first, only if fewer than 150 qualifying boys live in the area, so families should check the feeder parishes listed in Appendix 1 of the policy before assuming their son’s home falls within it. The policy also deals with a child whose Education, Health and Care Plan names the school: qualified children in that position are allocated places first, and our guide to EHCP grammar school admission and what the law says sets out how grammar schools word this in their own policies.

If numbers still exceed 150, the aggregate score of 220 is raised to contain the number of admissions; if fewer than 150 qualifying boys live in the area, qualifying boys from outside it are considered in score order, highest first. Boys with the same aggregate score are separated by the direct distance from home to school, measured by the local authority, and a tie for the last place is decided by a lottery drawn by an independent person; the definitive wording is in the school’s Admissions Policy for 2027 entry.

What Is the Sixth Form at Spalding Grammar Like?

The sixth form at Spalding Grammar School is co-educational, welcoming girls alongside boys from Year 12 onwards. While Years 7 to 11 are exclusively for boys, the sixth form broadens the school’s community. The school also welcomes sixth form applications from students at other schools and has set an admission number of 60 for them.

The sixth form’s entry requirements in the admission policy cover A-Level subjects including biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, history, geography, business studies, economics, and art and design. The general entry requirement is at least six grades 4 or higher at GCSE, including Maths and English Language or English Literature, with grade 5 or higher in subjects continued to A level; the policy adds that some subjects have additional expectations, and its subject table (headed for September 2026) asks students who took the subject at GCSE for grade 6 in biology, chemistry, physics, history, geography, business studies, economics and art and design, and grade 7 in mathematics. GCSE outcomes at the school — with 75.2% achieving grade 5 or above in both English and Maths in summer 2025 — provide a strong foundation for A-Level study. The school’s sixth form overview says students leave with a plan for their future, whether that is a place at university, a job or an apprenticeship. The school’s long tradition of service to Spalding and its surrounding parishes reflects a deep rootedness in the South Lincolnshire community.

The school’s size — 1,023 pupils on roll — strikes a balance between the resource breadth of a larger institution and the personal attention possible in a smaller community. The curriculum is broad and well-resourced, the extracurricular programme is wide-ranging, and the pastoral structure ensures that boys are well supported throughout their time at the school. For families in Spalding and South Lincolnshire, Spalding Grammar School is a well-established and well-regarded choice for academically able boys.

How Should My Son Prepare for the Spalding Grammar 11+?

The Lincolnshire Consortium’s advice on preparation is the same for all its schools: no special preparation is needed, and too much preparation puts children under pressure and may be counter-productive. The Consortium does not endorse tutoring. Familiarisation papers are made available to Lincolnshire feeder primary schools, and each real test has a short practice element. For families who choose to practise beyond the familiarisation materials, the two key areas are Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal and Spatial Reasoning.

For VR, build vocabulary through wide reading across a range of genres and non-fiction material. Then develop familiarity with the question types through structured practice, moving from accuracy at slow pace to accuracy at speed. The Consortium says the tests are constructed with an element of time pressure, and that it is possible to complete them in the given time.

For NVR/SR, work through each question type systematically before moving to full-paper timed practice. Because the second paper is divided into sections, each with a few unmarked practice questions, pacing within a section is worth practising explicitly rather than assuming it will come naturally.

150 places, allocated in a published order once boys have qualified

Qualifying is the first hurdle and the oversubscription criteria decide the rest, which means how far clear of the standard a boy lands can matter as much as clearing it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Spalding Grammar School selective?

Yes. Spalding Grammar School is a selective boys' grammar school. All Year 7 entrants must achieve a combined standardised score of 220 or more across both Lincolnshire Consortium GL Assessment papers — the same qualifying threshold applied across the consortium’s 15 selective schools in Lincolnshire. There is no non-selective route into Year 7. Girls are not admitted at Year 7 but are welcomed into the sixth form.

How many Year 7 places does Spalding Grammar offer?

Spalding Grammar School offers 150 Year 7 places for September 2027 entry. When more qualifying boys apply than there are places, the school applies its oversubscription criteria, placing qualified children with an EHCP that names the school first, then qualified looked-after and previously looked-after children, then qualifying boys from the designated transport area (Spalding and the feeder parishes of South Lincolnshire) before those living outside it. If numbers still exceed 150, the aggregate score of 220 is raised to contain the number of admissions.

What is the qualifying score for Spalding Grammar School?

The qualifying score for Spalding Grammar School is 220 on the combined standardised total across both GL Assessment papers — identical to the threshold for all other Lincolnshire Consortium grammar schools. Paper 1 is Verbal Reasoning and Paper 2 is Non-Verbal and Spatial Reasoning. Scores are age-standardised so that boys born in July or August are not disadvantaged relative to September-born peers. Reaching 220 does not by itself guarantee a place: if more than 150 boys qualify, the school’s 2027 admission policy raises the aggregate score of 220 to contain the number of admissions.

When did the Spalding Grammar 11+ tests take place in 2026?

For September 2027 entry, the Consortium tests were held on Friday 11 or Saturday 12 September 2026 (Verbal Reasoning) and Friday 18 or Saturday 19 September 2026 (Non-Verbal and Spatial Reasoning). The school’s 11+ FAQs say boys at Lincolnshire primary schools sit on the Saturdays and boys at schools outside Lincolnshire on the Fridays. Registration closed on 31 March 2026; the Consortium’s FAQs say a child who was ill on the test date, or who moved into the area after testing, can sit later by arrangement. Results are emailed to parents at 12:00 on 9 October 2026; the Common Application Form national closing date is 31 October 2026, and Lincolnshire accepts applications until 12 noon on 14 December 2026.

What Ofsted rating does Spalding Grammar have?

Spalding Grammar School was graded Good overall at its Ofsted inspection on 6 February 2024, with Good for quality of education, behaviour and attitudes, personal development, leadership and management, and sixth form provision. At GCSE, the Department for Education reports that 75.2% of students who completed key stage 4 in summer 2025 gained a grade 5 or higher in both English and Mathematics GCSE, against 45.4% across state schools in England. The school is an academy for boys aged 11 to 18, with 1,023 pupils on roll.

How long has Spalding Grammar School been open?

Spalding Grammar School says on its website that it has served the young people of its local community for more than 400 years. In its current form it is an academy, open since 1 February 2013, and it is its own admissions authority. It serves boys from Spalding and the surrounding parishes of South Lincolnshire as a selective boys' grammar school with 150 Year 7 places, and its sixth form admits girls as well as boys.

Does Spalding Grammar School have a sixth form and do girls attend?

Yes, Spalding Grammar School has a sixth form for Years 12 and 13. While the main school (Years 7 to 11) is boys-only, girls are welcomed into the sixth form alongside the boys. This makes the sixth form co-educational. The school’s admission policy sets a general entry requirement of at least six grades 4 or higher at GCSE, including Maths and English Language or English Literature.
