ESAT · TMUA · TARA · UCAT · LNAT · STEP — which test you need and how to prepare
Book a Free ConsultationIf you are an international student applying to a UK university, you may need to sit one or more admissions tests. Which tests apply depends entirely on your course and university — not your nationality. This guide provides a complete reference for 2027 entry, matching every major test to the courses that require it.
Oxford scrapped eight tests in January 2026: PAT, MAT, TSA, MLAT, PhilAT, BMSAT, AHCAAT, and CAT. They were replaced by ESAT, TMUA, and TARA. Any guidance based on pre-2026 Oxford tests is now outdated. Full details at Oxford admissions tests 2027.

One of the most common planning mistakes international students make is treating UK admissions tests as a single event to prepare for, rather than as a component of a multi-year preparation process. For students applying to Oxford, Cambridge, or top UK medical schools, the entire application process runs from Year 10 or 11 (age 14–15) through to offer in January of their final school year (age 17–18). Admissions tests fall near the end of this process, but preparation for them should begin much earlier.
A realistic preparation timeline for an international student taking both ESAT and TMUA (for multiple Cambridge choices) might look like this:
The principle that holds across all tests: the later you start, the less flexibility you have if early practice reveals significant gaps. Starting early creates time for genuine mastery rather than superficial familiarity.

All tests are delivered via Pearson VUE centres in over 180 countries. Fees are higher for candidates outside the UK: ESAT £130 (UK: £75); TMUA and TARA £133 each (UK: £78). UCAT, LNAT, and STEP have separate fee structures — check each test's official website. Register as early as possible once windows open; popular Pearson VUE centres fill quickly.
Detailed guides for each test: ESAT · TMUA · TARA · UCAT · LNAT · STEP.
The following tests no longer exist and are no longer relevant: PAT, MAT, TSA, MLAT, PhilAT, BMSAT, AHCAAT, CAT (all discontinued by Oxford, January 2026) and BMAT (discontinued earlier). Do not spend preparation time on any of these tests.
Not always — it depends on your course and university. Engineering, science, and mathematics courses at Cambridge, Oxford, and Imperial require ESAT or TMUA. Oxford PPE and social sciences require TARA. Medicine requires UCAT. Law at Oxford, UCL, and Bristol requires LNAT. History, English, and languages typically have no separate admissions test. Check the specific requirements for each course you are applying to on the university's official admissions pages.
Oxford scrapped eight tests in January 2026: PAT, MAT, TSA, MLAT, PhilAT, BMSAT, AHCAAT, and CAT. They were replaced by three new tests: ESAT for engineering and science, TMUA for maths and CS, and TARA for social sciences. If you have received advice about Oxford admissions based on pre-2026 information, it is now outdated. The PAT and MAT no longer exist.
International students pay higher fees than UK candidates. ESAT costs £130 (UK: £75). TMUA and TARA each cost £133 (UK: £78). UCAT, LNAT, and STEP have their own fee structures. Budget these costs alongside UCAS application fees as part of your total UK university application expense.
Most students benefit from starting UK University Admissions Tests: Complete Guide for International Students preparation three to six months before their test date. Beginning early allows time to cover all sections systematically, complete multiple full timed mock tests, and review performance patterns before the real sitting. Students who start preparation in the final few weeks before the exam rarely have enough time to address underlying weaknesses. Leading Tuition recommends a diagnostic assessment first to identify your strongest and weakest areas, then building a structured revision plan around those findings.
The scoring format varies depending on the specific test, but most university admissions tests use standardised or scaled scoring to allow fair comparison across all sitting windows and candidate cohorts. Understanding how scores are calculated — including whether there is negative marking — is an important part of preparation strategy. Our tutors explain the scoring mechanics at the start of every preparation programme so students can make informed decisions about time allocation and question selection during the exam.
