Boston Grammar School is a selective state grammar school for boys aged 11 to 18 in Boston, Lincolnshire, with a co-educational Sixth Form, tracing its foundation to a charter granted by Philip and Mary in 1555. For September 2027 entry, boys applying to Boston Grammar School had to register for the Lincolnshire Consortium 11+ test provided by GL Assessment, sit two reasoning papers in September 2026, and achieve the shared qualifying score of 220 to be considered for one of the school's 120 Year 7 places. Boston Grammar School states that, to date, it has been able to accommodate all children who have reached the required standard in the entry tests; if more qualifying boys apply than there are places, then after qualified children with an Education Health Care Plan naming the school are admitted, priority goes to looked-after children, then siblings, then straight-line distance, with a lottery as the final tie-break. This guide covers the school's history, its admissions criteria, the exam format, key 2026 dates, Ofsted and academic results, Sixth Form entry, and how to build an effective preparation plan.

About Boston Grammar School: History and Character

Boston Grammar School's origins stretch back further than almost any other school in Lincolnshire. The school was established by royal charter granted jointly by Philip and Mary in 1555. The oldest surviving part of the school's South End site — now serving as the school library — was built between 1567 and 1568, and remains a physical link to more than four and a half centuries of education on the same site.

Boston Grammar School converted to academy status on 1 January 2013, becoming a converter academy rather than remaining under local authority control, though it retains its selective, grammar school character. The school maintains a set of four houses — Laughton, Muston, Gannock and Parry — named after historical figures connected to the school, and marks its heritage each year with Beast Mart, a half-day holiday commemorating the historical cattle markets once held in the school yard.

Boston Grammar School teaches boys only from Year 7 to Year 11, but girls are welcomed into the co-educational Sixth Form alongside boys progressing from Year 11, making the school's post-16 provision co-educational while the main school remains single-sex. Notable alumni include Professor Jonathan Van-Tam, who was appointed Deputy Chief Medical Officer for England.

What Test Do Boys Sit for Boston Grammar School 11+?

Boston Grammar School is part of the Lincolnshire Consortium of Grammar Schools — the group of selective schools across the county that share a single 11+ entrance test, provided by GL Assessment. The entire test is built around two reasoning papers.

Paper 1 — Verbal Reasoning (VR): tests a boy's ability to work with language patterns, codes, sequences and logical relationships between words, drawing on codes, patterns, word construction and vocabulary. The 2026 paper was held on Friday 11 or Saturday 12 September 2026.

Paper 2 — Non-Verbal Reasoning with spatial awareness: tests the ability to spot rules and relationships in abstract shapes , with spatial awareness drawing on symmetry and rotation. The 2026 paper was held on Friday 18 or Saturday 19 September 2026.

All raw scores are age-standardised before being combined into a final qualifying score, adjusting for age so that a summer-born boy is not disadvantaged relative to an autumn-born classmate. The two standardised scores are added together, and the qualifying threshold of 220 is set to identify the most able 25% of pupils in the age group in primary schools in the selective areas of Lincolnshire. As with all Lincolnshire consortium schools, reaching 220 does not of itself guarantee admission to any individual school. If more qualifying boys apply than there are places, the school's own oversubscription criteria decide who is offered one of the 120 places.

How Does the Oversubscription Criteria Work at Boston Grammar School?

With 120 Year 7 places, Boston Grammar School states that, to date, it has been able to accommodate all children who have reached the required standard in the entry tests. Boston Grammar School's 11+ admissions page sets out this order when more pupils reach the standard than the school can accommodate, after qualified children with Education Health Care Plans naming the school are admitted:

  1. Looked-after children and previously looked-after children who meet the required qualifying standard
  2. Siblings of pupils already attending Boston Grammar School at the time of admission Straight-line distance from home to school, for all remaining qualifying boys If any of these criteria cannot separate applicants, a lottery drawn by an independent person decides

Distance, where it is the deciding factor, is calculated electronically by Lincolnshire County Council's school admissions team as a straight-line measurement between the family home and the school. If applicants cannot be separated by the criteria above, the tie-break is an independent lottery, drawn by a person not employed by the school or working in the Children's Services Directorate at the local authority. The Lincolnshire Consortium confirms that a family can apply for a different grammar school from the one where their child was tested.

Ofsted Rating and Academic Results at Boston Grammar School

Ofsted inspected Boston Grammar School on 28 April 2026 and published its report on 23 June 2026. The report card gives no single overall grade: attendance and behaviour were judged a strong standard; curriculum and teaching, inclusion, leadership and governance, personal development and wellbeing, and post-16 provision the expected standard; achievement needs attention; and safeguarding standards are met. On achievement, Ofsted’s report says pupils achieve highly overall, but that there is variability in their attainment and progress over time, including in the sixth form, and that leaders are aware of this and have taken steps to improve. In the school’s own published results for 2025 GCSEs, 52.8% of students achieved grade 5 or above in English and mathematics. The school’s Attainment 8 score — the average points score across a pupil's best eight GCSE subjects — was 53 for 2025, and its Progress 8 score, which measures how much progress pupils make relative to pupils with similar starting points nationally, was -0.4 for 2024. At A-level, the average result for 2025 was C-.

Ofsted’s provider page lists 924 pupils on roll against a capacity of 910. The school’s results page reports 88% of students progressing to education or employment in its 2025 A-level summary. Ofsted’s 2026 report card and these published figures are a starting point for families weighing Boston Grammar School against other Lincolnshire options such as Carre's Grammar School in Sleaford or Spalding Grammar School.

Sixth Form Entry at Boston Grammar School

Boston Grammar School's Sixth Form operates as a co-educational provision, admitting girls from Year 12 onward even though Years 7 to 11 remain a boys-only environment. Direct entry to the Sixth Form is not decided by the 11+ test used for Year 7 admission. The school’s sixth form entry requirements page asks for 9-4 grades in at least five GCSE subjects (or equivalent), with a minimum of grade 4 in both GCSE English and Mathematics. The page also asks for a minimum of grade 6 in any subject continued to A-level where that subject readily exists as a GCSE course, and a minimum of grade 7 in GCSE Mathematics for A-level Mathematics or Further Mathematics. The school also sets subject conditions where GCSE courses do not readily exist — grade 6 in Maths for A-level Economics, grade 5 in both Maths and English for Business Studies, and 6/6 in Double Science for the separate A-level sciences. Our Boston Grammar sixth form page sets the two records side by side.

How Should My Child Prepare for the Boston Grammar School 11+?

Preparation for Boston Grammar School should focus squarely on the two subjects tested in the Lincolnshire GL Assessment: Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning with spatial awareness. Boston Grammar School says neither paper tests memory of primary school curriculum learning, so there is nothing a candidate can revise; the Lincolnshire Consortium advises that no special preparation is needed and that children should approach the tests calmly.

Verbal Reasoning rewards both vocabulary knowledge and the ability to identify abstract patterns in language. A good foundation is wide reading — boys who read widely across fiction, non-fiction and quality journalism develop vocabulary organically, which supports the vocabulary and word-construction skills the school describes. Alongside reading, boys should work through the full range of GL Assessment VR question types under timed conditions.

Non-Verbal Reasoning with spatial awareness draws on no primary school curriculum content. Boston Grammar School describes the papers as cognitive skills application papers drawing on symmetry and rotation, so repeated, targeted practice with each question style builds familiarity.

Because qualifying does not of itself guarantee admission to any individual school, a personalised one-to-one approach can be valuable: it lets a tutor identify precisely which question types or skills a boy is weakest in, and design a programme that closes those specific gaps rather than relying on generic practice alone. At Leading Tuition, our specialist 11+ tutors are experienced with the Lincolnshire GL Assessment and support families across Boston and the wider county, including through online tuition. Frequently Asked Questions

Is Boston Grammar School selective and boys-only?

Yes. Boston Grammar School is a fully selective grammar school in Boston, Lincolnshire, admitting boys only from Year 7 to Year 11, with a co-educational Sixth Form. Every boy seeking a Year 7 place must register for and sit the Lincolnshire Consortium 11+ test, achieving a combined standardised score of at least 220 across two GL Assessment papers to qualify. Girls are admitted into the Sixth Form alongside boys who have completed Year 11 at Boston Grammar School, but Years 7 to 11 remain a single-sex boys' environment.

How many Year 7 places does Boston Grammar School offer?

Boston Grammar School has a Published Admission Number (PAN) of 120 places for Year 7 entry. Ofsted’s provider page lists 924 pupils on roll against a capacity of 910. Reaching the 220 qualifying score does not of itself guarantee admission to any individual school, and the school's oversubscription criteria apply if more qualifying boys apply than there are Year 7 places.

What is the qualifying score for Boston Grammar School 11+ 2026?

The qualifying score for Boston Grammar School, in common with all Lincolnshire Consortium grammar schools, is a combined standardised score of at least 220 across two GL Assessment papers: Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning with spatial awareness. Verbal Reasoning was held on Friday 11 or Saturday 12 September 2026 and Non-Verbal Reasoning on Friday 18 or Saturday 19 September 2026; results were emailed to parents at 12:00 (midday) on Friday 9 October 2026. Scores are age-standardised, and 220 is set to identify the most able 25% of pupils in the age group in the selective areas of Lincolnshire. Reaching 220 qualifies a boy for consideration, but it does not by itself guarantee a place at Boston Grammar School specifically.

What are Boston Grammar School's oversubscription and priority criteria?

When more qualifying boys apply than there are places, Boston Grammar School allocates its 120 Year 7 places in this order, after admitting qualified children with an Education Health Care Plan naming the school: first, looked-after children and previously looked-after children; second, siblings of pupils already attending the school; and finally, all remaining qualifying boys ranked by straight-line distance from home to school, calculated electronically by Lincolnshire County Council's school admissions team. The school states that, to date, it has been able to accommodate all children who have reached the required standard in the entry tests. If these criteria cannot separate applicants, a lottery drawn by an independent person decides.

What Ofsted rating does Boston Grammar School have?

Ofsted inspected Boston Grammar School on 28 April 2026 and published its report on 23 June 2026. The report card gives no single overall grade: attendance and behaviour were judged a strong standard; curriculum and teaching, inclusion, leadership and governance, personal development and wellbeing, and post-16 provision the expected standard; achievement needs attention; and safeguarding standards are met. The school’s own results page reports, for 2025 GCSEs, an Attainment 8 score of 53 and 52.8% of students achieving grade 5 or above in English and mathematics, and a Progress 8 score of -0.4 for 2024. The 2025 A-level average result was C-.

Does Boston Grammar School have a catchment area?

Boston Grammar School’s published Year 7 priority order lists no catchment area or priority zone. The Lincolnshire Consortium says a family can apply for a different grammar school from the one where their child was tested, and the qualifying standardised score is 220 on both papers. If more qualifying boys apply than the 120 Year 7 places, then after qualified children with an Education Health Care Plan naming the school are admitted, straight-line distance from home to school ranks the remaining applicants after looked-after children and siblings, and a lottery is the final tie-break.

What are the entry requirements for Boston Grammar School Sixth Form?

Direct entry to Boston Grammar School's Sixth Form is not decided by the 11+ test. The school's sixth form entry requirements page asks for 9-4 grades (or equivalent) in at least five GCSE subjects with a minimum of grade 4 in both GCSE English and Mathematics. It also asks for a minimum of grade 6 in any subject continued to A-level where that subject readily exists as a GCSE course, and a minimum of grade 7 in GCSE Mathematics for A-level Mathematics or Further Mathematics. The Sixth Form is co-educational and admits girls from Year 12 onward even though Years 7 to 11 remain boys-only.

How should my child prepare for the Boston Grammar School 11+?

Preparation for Boston Grammar School should focus on the two components of the Lincolnshire GL Assessment: Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning with spatial awareness. Boston Grammar School says neither paper tests memory of primary school curriculum learning, and the Lincolnshire Consortium advises that no special preparation is needed and that children should approach the tests calmly. Boys who want extra practice can build vocabulary and pattern-recognition skills in Year 5, ahead of the tests early in Year 6, using the official familiarisation papers. Because qualifying does not of itself guarantee admission to any individual school, a personalised one-to-one tutor can help identify exactly where marks are being lost and target that gap directly.

How can Leading Tuition help with the Boston Grammar School 11+?

Leading Tuition's specialist tutors provide personalised one-to-one 11+ tuition, including online, for the Lincolnshire GL Assessment: Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning with spatial awareness.
