UCAT for South African Students: Matric to UK Medicine (2026-27 Entry Guide)

UCAT 2026 dates and fees, English-language rules, and where to check NSC entry requirements and HPCSA/GMC registration for 2027 entry

South African students applying to UK medical schools for 2027 entry were required to sit the University Clinical Aptitude Test (UCAT) between 13 July and 24 September 2026 for relevant courses at UCAT Consortium universities. Registration and booking for the UCAT 2026 are now closed, the UCAS deadline is 15 October 2026, and UCAT delivers your result directly to your chosen UK universities in early November 2026. The UCAT is delivered in Pearson test centres across the UK and in 130+ countries worldwide, and the Pearson Test Centre Locator on ucat.ac.uk shows where your nearest one is. What genuinely differs for a Matric background is not the test itself but everything around it: how each university treats NSC grades in its entry requirements, whether you need to show English-language evidence, and what happens years later if a South African-qualified UK doctor wants to come home and register with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA). This guide covers the UCAT mechanics every applicant needs, plus the South Africa-specific points to check with each university and regulator.

Checked September 2026

Per the UCAT Consortium (ucat.ac.uk), UCAT 2026 registration and booking are closed: the booking deadline was 16 September 2026 and the last test day was 24 September 2026. Instructions for UCAT 2027 registration and booking will be published in March 2027, and the UCAS deadline is 15 October 2026.

Which UK Medical Schools Require the UCAT, and Who Must Sit It?

The UCAT is a compulsory entry requirement for applicants to relevant medical or dental degree programmes at UK and Partner Consortium Universities. For 2027 entry (or deferred entry in 2028), you are required to sit the UCAT 2026 if you apply to a relevant course at a UCAT Consortium university, and you should check the entry requirements for each course with the relevant university before booking a test. The UCAT Consortium's list of universities and course codes is at ucat.ac.uk/about-ucat/universities.

The UCAT Consortium's eligibility page says applicants should check the entry requirements for each course with the relevant university before booking a test, because alternative entry requirements apply to some groups of applicants. For a broader look at how UCAT prep fits into a full application, see our Medicine Prep Hub, and for section-by-section coaching, our UCAT tutor service.

UCAT Format: Sections, Timing and Scoring Explained

The UCAT is a computer-based test with four separately timed sections, all multiple choice, taken in one standard sitting of just under two hours that cannot be paused once it has started, although each section is preceded by a timed instruction section. There is no negative marking, so every question should be answered even under time pressure — a blank answer scores the same as a wrong one.

Section Questions Time Score Range
Verbal Reasoning4422 minutes300–900
Decision Making3537 minutes300–900
Quantitative Reasoning3626 minutes300–900
Situational Judgement6926 minutesBands 1–4
Total184~2 hours900–2700 + Band

Source: UCAT Consortium test format and scoring page (ucat.ac.uk), retrieved 29 September 2026.

The three cognitive subtests — Verbal Reasoning, Decision Making and Quantitative Reasoning — are each scored from 300 to 900, giving a combined cognitive total of 900 to 2700. Situational Judgement is scored separately in bands from 1 (highest) to 4 (lowest); an increasing number of universities use the SJT in selection, with some excluding lower performing candidates. Abstract Reasoning was removed from the UCAT in 2025, so the four-section format above is the one to prepare for.

Where Can South African Students Sit the UCAT? Test Centres and 2026 Dates

The UCAT is delivered in Pearson test centres across the UK and in 130+ countries worldwide. Universities expect applicants to take the test, which for some EU and international candidates could mean travelling to another country. Online proctored testing (OnVUE UCAT) for 2026 ran between 13 July and 20 September 2026, and applications to sit the OnVUE UCAT 2026 have now closed. Use the Pearson VUE UCAT test centre locator to find your nearest test centre.

Registration for the 2026 UCAT cycle (for 2027 entry) opened on 20 May 2026 at ucat.ac.uk. Booking opened on 23 June 2026 at 14:00 UK time, and the booking deadline was 16 September 2026 at 15:00 UK time — the UCAT Consortium does not make exceptions to this deadline. Testing started on 13 July 2026 and the last test day was 24 September 2026, so registration and booking for the UCAT 2026 are now closed; instructions on how to register and book for the UCAT 2027 will be published in March 2027. The test fee is £70 for tests taken in the UK and £115 for tests taken outside the UK. The UCAT bursary scheme is open to UK candidates who meet its criteria, and its 2026 application deadline was 24 September 2026 (15:00 UK time). If you did not sit the UCAT 2026, contact the universities you are considering to ask how they treat applications without a UCAT result; the UCAS deadline is 15 October 2026.

From Matric to UK Medicine: Where to Check NSC Entry Requirements

Check how each university you apply to treats National Senior Certificate (NSC) grades against its entry requirements, subject by subject. Look up each target university's own South Africa or international entry requirements page rather than relying on a single conversion or on general guides.

Entry requirements for medicine can be specific about both subjects and grades, so read each target university's own page carefully. A Matric average that clears one medical school's threshold may fall short of another's, so check each target school's own published South Africa/international entry page before finalising your UCAS list.

University Where to check
Each medical school on your UCAS list (entry requirements)Its own South Africa or international entry requirements page, for the NSC subjects and grades it names
Each medical school on your UCAS list (English language)Its own English-language requirements page, for the evidence it accepts from South African applicants
Each medical school on your UCAS list (UCAT)ucat.ac.uk/about-ucat/universities, to see whether the course requires the UCAT

Check the entry requirements for each course with the relevant university before you apply, and confirm current requirements directly on each university's international admissions pages. For UCAT score benchmarks once you clear the academic threshold, see our UCAT score requirements for UK medical schools guide.

Do South African Students Need IELTS for UK Medical School Applications?

South Africa is not on the majority-English-speaking countries list in the UK Immigration Rules (Appendix English Language). That list — used to decide which nationals meet the English language requirement for routes including the Student visa — covers 18 entries: Antigua and Barbuda, Australia, the Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, the British Overseas Territories, Canada, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, Malta, New Zealand, St Kitts and Nevis, St Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago and the United States of America. South Africa's absence from this list means South African applicants cannot rely on nationality alone to meet the Student visa English language requirement; what each university asks for its offer is a separate question, so check its own English-language page.

Do not assume the same English-language arrangements apply at every medical school on your UCAS list: check the English-language requirements page for each specific university, and ask its admissions office if anything is unclear, well before your UCAS deadline.

The Four UCAT Subtests at a Glance

The UCAT assesses a range of mental abilities identified by university medical and dental schools as important; here is what each of the four sections involves and what to practise.

Verbal Reasoning (44 questions, 22 minutes): This section assesses your ability to read and think carefully about information presented in passages of text and to determine whether specific conclusions can be drawn from that information. 44 questions in 22 minutes is roughly 30 seconds per question, so practise under the section clock.

Decision Making (35 questions, 37 minutes): This section assesses your ability to apply logic to reach a decision or conclusion, evaluate arguments and analyse statistical information, and a simple on-screen calculator is available. Practise the question types and strategies covered in the UCAT Consortium's Decision Making Question Tutorial, whatever your Maths grade.

Quantitative Reasoning (36 questions, 26 minutes): This section assesses your ability to use numerical skills to solve problems, with questions that most often refer to charts and graphs containing data and a basic on-screen calculator available; questions are less to do with numerical facility and more to do with problem solving. Practise under the section clock so that the timing feels familiar.

Situational Judgement (69 questions, 26 minutes): The largest section by question count, it measures your capacity to understand real world situations and to identify critical factors and appropriate behaviour in dealing with them. Questions do not require medical or procedural knowledge. Preparation should use the official UCAT preparation resources, including the Question Tutorials, which the UCAT Consortium provides free.

What UCAT Score Do South African Students Need for UK Medical Schools?

The UCAT Consortium says there is no single score that guarantees selection and not all universities have a minimum score requirement; some publish a threshold score on their websites, while others weight the UCAT alongside factors such as academic achievement. That said, published test statistics give useful planning benchmarks. Across the 2025 cycle, the mean total cognitive score was 1891. In 2025 the 9th decile, the 90th percentile, was a total cognitive score of 2220; the Consortium notes that scores from 2025 are not directly comparable with those from before 2025 because Abstract Reasoning was removed.

Universities use the UCAT in different ways, so read each university's own page on how it uses the test. For the Situational Judgement Test, 21% of 2025 candidates were placed in Band 1 and 10% in Band 4. For a fuller international benchmark breakdown, see our UCAT score requirements for international students guide.

HPCSA, GMC and the Registration Pathway: What Happens After You Qualify?

This matters for any South African family weighing whether a UK medicine degree is a one-way or two-way door. Before you commit to a UK medical school, read the General Medical Council (GMC) and Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) published guidance on registration for doctors who qualified in another country, and check it again as you approach graduation.

The question that matters most for a South African student starting UK medicine as an undergraduate is what happens if, after qualifying in the UK, you want to return to South Africa to practise. Any South African student planning a return to practise at home should check HPCSA's current foreign-graduate guidance directly, ideally before committing to a specific UK medical school, and check it again as you approach graduation.

Is a UK Application an Additional Route to Medicine for South African Students?

UK medicine is a route worth researching properly. For students who want to widen their options, or who are drawn to a specific UK university or specialty pathway, the UCAT and a UK application are an additional route to consider — provided the entry-requirement, English-language and UCAT preparation pieces above are planned for well in advance.

A Step-by-Step UCAT Preparation Timeline for South African Students

Plan your UCAT preparation around your own school examination commitments. Starting early avoids clashing serious UCAT preparation with the run-up to your final school examinations.

8 or more weeks out: Sit one full official UCAT practice test under strict timed conditions to establish a baseline before targeted work begins. Create your UCAT account as soon as registration opens and book your test as soon as booking opens; the UCAT Consortium will publish instructions on how to register and book for the UCAT 2027 in March 2027.

6-8 weeks out: Work through each section systematically at a steady daily pace: Verbal Reasoning pace drills, Decision Making logic and probability question types, Quantitative Reasoning data-table fluency, and Situational Judgement practice using the official UCAT resources.

3-5 weeks out: Move to full timed mock papers at least three times a week, with a genuine error-review process after each one — distinguishing a content gap from a timing issue or a misread question, and tracking recurring error patterns rather than just re-doing questions you already know.

Final 1-2 weeks: Stop introducing new strategies. Sit a mock every other day, prioritise sleep and rest before test day, and avoid cramming in the final days.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do South African students need to sit the UCAT for UK medicine?

Yes, if you apply to a relevant course at a UCAT Consortium university: the UCAT is a compulsory entry requirement for those medical and dental programmes, and you should check each course's entry requirements with the university before booking a test. The 2026 test window for 2027 entry ran from 13 July to 24 September 2026, so registration and booking are now closed, and the UCAS deadline is 15 October 2026. The UCAT is delivered in Pearson test centres across the UK and in 130+ countries worldwide, and the Pearson Test Centre Locator shows your nearest test centre. You may only sit the UCAT once in any test cycle.

Where can South African students sit the UCAT in 2026?

The UCAT is delivered in Pearson test centres across the UK and in 130+ countries worldwide; use the Pearson Test Centre Locator on ucat.ac.uk to find your nearest test centre. Registration opened on 20 May 2026, booking opened on 23 June 2026 at 14:00 UK time, and the booking deadline was 16 September 2026 at 15:00 UK time, so registration and booking for the UCAT 2026 are now closed. The test fee for tests taken outside the UK is £115. Instructions on how to register and book for the UCAT 2027 will be published in March 2027.

Do South African Matric (NSC) results meet UK medical school entry requirements?

It depends on the university and the course, so check the entry requirements for each course with the relevant university before you apply, including how it treats National Senior Certificate (NSC) results. Ask each medical school whether it treats results from the NSC and the Independent Examinations Board (IEB) in the same way, and confirm the exact subject grades on its own international entry requirements page, ideally before you finalise your UCAS choices.

Do South African students need IELTS for UK medical school applications?

It depends on the university and on your visa route. South Africa is not on the majority-English-speaking countries list in the UK Immigration Rules (Appendix English Language), which lists 18 entries including Canada, the USA, Australia, New Zealand and several Caribbean states, so South African nationals cannot meet the Student visa English language requirement through nationality alone. What each university asks of applicants for its offer is a separate question, so ask each admissions office what English-language evidence it accepts. Check each medical school's own English-language page before assuming you are exempt.

What UCAT score do South African students need for UK medical schools?

The UCAT produces a cognitive score from 900 to 2700 across three subtests, plus a Situational Judgement Test band from 1 to 4. The UCAT Consortium says no single score guarantees selection and not all universities have a minimum score requirement, and the mean total cognitive score in the 2025 cycle was 1891. In 2025 the 9th decile, the 90th percentile, was a total cognitive score of 2220, so check how each university you are considering uses the UCAT rather than aiming for a single figure. An increasing number of universities use the SJT in selection, with some excluding lower performing candidates.

Do South African doctors who qualify in the UK need to re-register with HPCSA to work back home?

That is a question for the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA). Check its current foreign-graduate guidance directly, ideally before committing to a specific UK medical school, and check it again as you approach graduation. Check the GMC's guidance on registration too, so that you understand both directions before you apply. Settling this before you finalise your UCAS choices means you can weigh where you want to train and practise with the full picture.
